Will fast-food protests spur higher minimum wage?

Fast-food worker Michelle Osborn, 23, of Flint shouts out chants as she and a few dozen others strike outside of McDonald's on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 in Flint. Some fast food restaurant workers have walked off the job in the Detroit area as part of an effort to push for higher wages. Organizers say they began the walkout at restaurants in Lincoln Park and Southfield on Tuesday night. Workers in Flint hit the street Wednesday outside a McDonald's, saying they want wages "super-sized." Workers want $15 and hour, better working conditions and the right to unionize. The restaurant industry says higher wages would hurt job creation. The actions follow strikes this week in other parts of the country. Terrance Wise has two jobs in Kansas City ? one at a burger joint, a second at a pizza restaurant ? but he says his paychecks aren't enough to buy shoes for his three daughters and insure his 15-year-old car. So he decided to draw attention to his plight: He walked off work in protest.

Wise was among a few thousand fast-food workers in seven cities, including New York, Chicago and Detroit, who took to the streets last week, carrying "Strike" and "Supersize Our Wages" signs in front of McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King and other restaurants. They demanded better pay, the right to unionize and a more than doubling of the federal minimum hourly wage from $7.25 to $15.

"We work hard for companies that are making millions," the 34-year-old Wise says, adding that he lost his home last year, unable to make mortgage payments despite working about 50-hour weeks at Pizza Hut and Burger King. "We're not asking for the world. We want to make enough to make a decent living. We deserve better. If they respect us and pay us and treat us right, it'll lift up the whole economy."

These one-day protests, which also took place in St. Louis, Milwaukee and Flint, Mich., come amid calls from the White House, some members of Congress and economists to raise the federal minimum wage, which was last increased in 2009. Most of the proposals, though, seek a more modest rise than those urged by fast-food workers. President Barack Obama wants to boost the hourly wage to $9. And in July, more than 100 economists signed a petition supporting a bill sponsored by a Florida congressman that would hike it to $10.50 an hour.

The restaurant industry argues that a $15 hourly wage could lead to businesses closings and fewer jobs. It also notes the cost of living varies greatly around the country and many states have higher minimum wages than the federal rate. (Eighteen states and the District of Columbia, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.)

The Employment Policies Institute, which receives some funding from the industry, ran a full-page ad last week in USA Today, warning of another potential consequence: It showed the uniform of a fast-food worker with an iPad face, saying the wage increase could result in employees being replaced with automation, such as touch-screen ordering.

So at a time when the economy is growing steadily but slowly and about 11.5 million people are unemployed ? nearly double the level before the Great Recession ? how likely is it Congress will increase the minimum wage? And have these protests done any good?

The answers depend on whom you ask.

"They're very effective," says U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat and co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. "They've brought attention to appalling conditions with workers putting in very long hours ... and not making enough money to survive. This I think is scandal. .. We believe it's essential to be paid livable wages. We know the companies can afford it. These are highly profitable businesses. It would be good not just for the family budget but for the national budget."

Ellison's caucus launched a national "Raise Up America" campaign this summer that has partnered with fast-food workers and others in low-wage industries to highlight the call for better salaries. The congressman says he's not deterred by likely resistance in the GOP-dominated House.

"Remember, things that don't look possible become possible if people advocate for them," he says, adding that in 1955 someone was probably saying "they're never going to end segregation. ... Sometimes these things catch on. I think the thing to do is keep on pushing, keep on talking. ... That's how we win."

But others are more skeptical and think if there is a winner, it's unions. The Service Employees International Union is providing financial support and staff to help train organizers for this campaign.

These protests show unions "still can appeal to and speak for workers who are on the fringes of the workforce ? the less skilled, the part-timers and the immigrant workers," Gary Chaison, professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Massachusetts, wrote in an email.

These still are hard times, people are happy to be employed and the political climate in the House is not conducive for an increase, he adds. "The demonstrations are street theater and the rehabilitation of the image of American unions, but it's not going to drive new minimum wage policy," he wrote.

Scott DeFife, executive vice president of the National Restaurant Association, calls the protests a campaign "to disparage the industry," which he says operates on a tight profit margin. Doubling wages, he says, "would definitely have an impact on the creation of new jobs." He says it would be especially harmful for young people, for whom the jobless rate in some communities is already in the double digits.

Some fast food companies responded to the protests by saying they respect the rights of their workers.

And some who walked out used the media spotlight to talk openly about their financial struggles.

Kareem Sparks, a 30-year-old father of two boys, 6 and 12, was laid off in 2011 from a $17.50-an-hour city job in New York. His unemployment benefits ran out and he turned to food pantries. Five months ago, he found work at McDonald's.

"I'm grateful they gave me an opportunity to feed my family and put food on the table, but it's not enough," he says. Sparks supplements his income with a second job as a security guard, earning about $8 an hour. Together, he says, he brings home about $1,000-$1,100 every two weeks and needs food stamps to survive.

"It's horrible to know when I pick up my (McDonalds) check, it's going to be less than $200," he says. "You spend all your money in one store and go to sleep broke. It's not fair. ... Some people get their checks and don't come back to work."

The average hourly salary for fast-food workers was $9.00 in May 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average age for these workers is 29 years old; for women, it's 32, according to the bureau. The restaurant association says its own analysis of Census data found that slightly more than 25 percent of fast-food workers are heads of households.

Both sides in the fight over the minimum wage cite numerous studies to buttress their arguments about whether a raise would be harmful.

The petition signed by the economists says that for decades, research has "found that no significant effects on employment opportunities result when the minimum wage rises in reasonable increments." The economists also note that minimum-wage workers employed full time for the entire year earn $15,080, almost 20 percent below the poverty level for a family of three.

But Michael Saltsman, research director at the Employment Policies Institute, cites another study that he says found raising the minimum wage was counterproductive ? with more people losing than gaining because hours were reduced and jobs were cut.

Tessie Harrell, one of the workers in the middle of this academic debate, walked off her job in protest last week.

As a Burger King manager in Milwaukee, Harrell, 34, has to stretch her $8.25 hourly salary to support five children (a sixth lives on her own). They live in a two-bedroom apartment. Her mother helped out financially and with child care, but she has since moved to a nursing home.

"It's not like we're teens working for a pair of shoes or a cell phone," Harrell says. "We're grown adults who can't find better jobs."

She would like to see something come from the protests, a wage improvement, even if it's not $15 an hour.

"I hope it works," she says. "We're just trying to survive and build a life for our children."

Why Welcome a Same-Sex Couple to Church?

Jahi Chikwendiu / The Washington Post / Getty

Gary Nixon, right, and Mel White, a gay couple, attend Jerry Falwell's church in Lynchburg, VA. The couple (together for 20 years) has rented a cottage directly across the street from Falwell's church for a year, are are attending services there and getting to know the neighbors. While some people have called them sinners, others have brought over pies and cookies in welcome.

Imagine this no-longer-hypothetical situation: Matt and Alex Jones-Smith, newlyweds, arrive on a Monday morning in summertime to register their adopted daughter, Rachel, for Vacation Bible School at Maranatha Bible Church on Main Street.

What should be the response of the Sunday school superintendent?

  1. Provide directions to the nearest liberal congregation.
  2. Register Rachel for Vacation Bible School and then hand the couple Marantha Bible's statement of faith, including the part on human sexuality where homosexual behavior is condemned.
  3. Proceed with registration, and then ask the Jones-Smiths, legally married in the eyes of the state, to meet with the pastor to talk about baptism and membership.
  4. None of the above.

The Unbiblical Marriage

This week, Minnesota and Rhode Island became the 12th and 13th states to allow same-sex marriage. With the favorable U.S. Supreme Court rulings in June, there will be more same-sex marriages nationwide for years to come. The 2010 federal census estimated there are already more than 150,000 same-sex couples legally married or in legal civil unions. It reports some states experienced a 50 percent or more increase in households with same-sex couples from 2000 to 2010.

For generations, Christianity has encountered unions outside the one man-one woman Christian ideal. During the colonial missionary era in Africa, many Christian churches had zero tolerance for a new convert with multiple wives. If these men wished to be baptized, join the church, and follow Christ, they had to dismiss all but one wife.

But missionaries soon realized that this policy of zero tolerance created enormous hardship on abandoned mothers and their children. It also absolved the polygamous husband of providing for dependent children of his former wives, according to Sunday Agang, academic dean at ECWA (Evangelical Church of West Africa) Seminary, Jos, Nigeria.

Over time, indigenous churches developed more than one response. Some churches accepted the entire household of a husband who desired to become a Christian yet had more than one wife. Many churches, however, did not permit these new converts to preach or teach or lead in the church.

Yet, the goal of churches remained the same. Once a person accepted Christ, Christians invited the individual into joyful, church-based fellowship and a lifelong journey of discipleship and sanctification.

Welcoming, Not Affirming

Choice #4?none of the above?is the answer that best reflects the sense of confusion that many church leaders have regarding the most appropriate response to state-recognized same-sex couples.

But for churches committed to the biblical teaching about heterosexual marriage and compassion for all, is there a solidly biblical approach or model for churches to follow? As early as the 1990s, conservative Christian leaders began to welcome, but not affirm, the open involvement of people with same-sex attraction into church life. Along with a sincere welcome, tragically, too many times fear of disease (HIV/AIDS), public condemnation, homophobia, and pressure for behavior change through unproven and often harmful therapies overwhelmed any sense of welcome.

There is some evidence of progress. A new Pew Research Center survey found that less than 1 in 3 LGBT respondents reported feeling unwelcome in a place of worship. Even fewer reported that this unwelcome feeling occurred within the past 12 months.

Christians and the church can do much more beyond welcome. About half of LGBT adults surveyed report no religious affiliation. While the ones who did attend worship felt welcome, the Pew survey found that most LGBT respondents view major religious groups (Christians, Jews, and Muslims) as "unfriendly."

How MOOCs Can Help India

Image: DAVID DESPAU

Digital technologies have the potential to dramatically transform Indian higher education. A new model built around massive open online courses (MOOCs) that are developed locally and combined with those provided by top universities abroad could deliver higher education on a scale and at a quality not possible before.

University enrollment in India is huge and growing. It surpassed the U.S.'s enrollment in 2010 and became second only to China that year. Every day in India 5,000 students enroll at a university and 10 new institutions open their doors.

At more than 3 percent of the country's GDP, India's spending on higher education is one of the highest in the world. Yet per-student spending is among the lowest. While recent expansion has widened access to universities, it has further reduced per-student spending and aggravated already acute faculty shortages. As a result, quality has declined.

India must continue to expand access to higher education while preserving quality and reducing costs. This situation is not unique to India, but given its enormous size and unique position, India's challenges are formidable. Digital technologies, particularly the extensive use of MOOCs, could help.

India has experimented with online classes before, but their impact has been marginal. A decade ago the country began using the Internet to distribute video and Web-based courses under a government-funded program, the National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning. Developers created more than 900 courses, focused mainly on science and engineering, with about 40 hours of instruction each. With limited interactivity and uneven quality, these courses failed to attract a large body of students.

MOOCs have given Indian academics a better sense of how a lecture could be restructured into short, self-contained segments with high interactivity to engage students more effectively. Plans are afoot for the Indian Institutes of Technology, widely considered to be among the world's top engineering schools, to offer three basic IT courses in data structure, programming and algorithms to hundreds of thousands of undergraduates through MOOCs. These courses would award credits and count toward degrees.

It helps that India is full of young people who possess a high comfort level with technology. Indians are among the most aggressive users of MOOCs. Of the 2.9 million registered users of Coursera in March, more than 250,000 were from India, second only to those from the U.S.

Yet we still need to find the right model to use MOOCs in an Indian context. With a decade of experience in this space and a vibrant technology ecosystem, India will most likely find its way soon.

Time Warner Cable loses CBS channels, CBS says first time dropped from cable

Earlier this week negotiations between CBS and Time Warner Cable broke down and, for a few minutes, resulted in channels (CBS in some areas including New York City, Los Angeles and Dallas, plus Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix and Smithsonian Channel nationally) dropping from the cable service. The channels were restored and talks continued, but now time is up and it's official, the channels are out. According to CBS, this is the first time it's ever been dropped from a cable system. Time Warner Cable has its own statement, claiming CBS has "refused to have a productive discussion" since the Tuesday morning extension in talks. With the NFL season looming we'll see how long TWC is willing to push Aereo and antennas as an alternative solution in these major markets and CBS is willing to live without its viewers for ratings purposes. For now, subscribers missing The Doctors can check out a video from TWC explaining exactly what happens behind the scenes when channels go dark.

Talking Pints: Free Drink, Free Food and Footprints | the Beijinger ...

TFI?Friday. Stifling, ain't it? There's only one thing for it: another night out on a terrace somewhere with a cold drink in hand. So what's there to do? Plenty, in short. There's a Hotpot Party at Migas, a Footprint night at Lantern, another edition of The Detroit Series, and The Bookworm Quiz moves into its new home in the notoriously feisty Friday night slot.

Plan B turns one on Sunday (Aug 4). The contingency has come a long way in 12 short months ? I can't even remember what it looked like when it used to be only half as big ? but they'll celebrate turning one with a blowout party between 1 and 4pm where they'll be shifting free beer, free cocktails and free food. Even if you hate the place, get along and fill your belly on them. Just to spite them.

Check out this swanky clubber's website. Slick, eh? Given that they hosted a party at Dada last night, it's safe to assume we may see a BJ version before too long.

Don't forget about Qixi Festival. Chinese Valentines Day is coming up fast (Aug 13). Wine Republic are rolling out a promotion on some of their stuff until August 15.

Highlights:

  • We mentioned it up there, but the Hotpot Party at Migas tonight (Aug 2) will be well worth a stop. DJ?Wordy will deputise at the decks.
  • Tom Champagne will host the inaugural Friday Night Quiz at The Bookworm later tonight.
  • While Alfa hosts a Rainbow Party complete with rainbow shots and rainbow cake.
  • Lantern will host Who is the DJ? tomorrow night (Aug 3). You'll have to stop by for the answer.
  • Also on Saturday, Dave Spivey returns to The Bar at Migas for the latest in their Detroit Series.
  • And Comedy Club China will provide the laughs at Taps from 8pm.

There's plenty more going on, but you'll have to go here to find out about it.

Have a great weekend.

Washington, Carroll 'thrilled' for 'Raisin' return

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tony Award winners Diahann Carroll and Denzel Washington will play mother and son on Broadway in a spring revival of the classic American play "A Raisin in the Sun," an opportunity that has left him "overjoyed" and her "thrilled."

"I think it's one of our most original plays and I think that's why it keeps coming back," said Carroll by phone from Los Angeles. Washington, en route to a film set in Boston on Thursday afternoon, agreed: "It's one of those classics."

Previews of Lorraine Hansberry's play begin March 8 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre with an opening night scheduled for April 3. Kenny Leon, who directed Washington on Broadway to a Tony in "Fences," will helm the production.

Both Carroll and Washington confessed that they were somewhat daunted by the prospects of an eight-show week. For Carroll, it's the first time on Broadway in 30 years but "once you're into the flow of it, it becomes a life style." Washington, speaking on the way to the set of "The Equalizer," said theater and film ? with its 14-hour days ? were both tests of endurance.

"While you're sleeping tonight, I'll be running around on the street of Boston so I don't take that lightly," he said. "I don't think eight-shows-a-week is necessarily harder, but the energy I get from the audiences, you don't get that on a film."

Set in the late 1950s in a rundown South Side Chicago apartment, "A Raisin in the Sun" deals with the hopes and disappointments of a black family trying to find a better life in a white neighborhood. It was the first play by a black woman to be produced on Broadway. Hansberry became the youngest American and the first black winner of the New York Drama Critic's Circle Award, in 1959.

Carroll, 78, met Hansberry before the playwright died of cancer at age 34 in 1965. "She was extraordinary and I think that's one of the reasons why it is an honor to be asked to be part of this," said Carroll. "She faced everything with such intelligence and grace. She was dying when we met but you would never have known that."

This will be the second Broadway revival of the play. The original Broadway production in 1959 featured Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil and Diana Sands, all who reunited for a 1961 film adaptation. The last Broadway revival occurred in 2004, starring Diddy, Phylicia Rashad, Sanaa Lathan and Audra McDonald.

The play's central conflict concerns Lena Younger's late husband's insurance money. She wants to use it to move the family out of their cramped tenement apartment and into a house in a white neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. She also wants to pay her daughter's medical school tuition.

But her son, Walter Lee Younger, sees the money as a chance to open a liquor store and be more like the wealthy white men for whom he works as a chauffeur. He wants to make life better for his own son and pregnant wife. "I open and close car doors all day long. I drive a man around in his limousine and I say, 'Yes, sir; no, sir; very good sir,'" he tells his mother in one scene.

Washington, whose film "2 Guns" opens Friday and was recently a best actor contender at the Academy Awards for playing alcoholic pilot Whip Whitaker in the film "Flight," recalls the film fondly, while Carroll vividly remembers seeing the original cast on Broadway.

"It was like an out-of-body experience watching that group of people make this thing come alive," she said. She had always wished to play the part of Ruth Younger, Dee's part. "Playing the mother is not something I really thought I'd live to be," she said with a laugh.

The new production will also star Academy Award-nominee Sophie Okonedo from "Hotel Rwanda," making her Broadway debut as Ruth Younger, and Tony Award-winner Anika Noni Rose ("Caroline, or Change") as Beneatha Younger.

The cast also includes Stephen Tyrone Williams, most recently in "Lucky Guy," and Jason Dirden and Tony-nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson, both of whom were in the recent revival of "Fences" with Washington. Influential theater and film creator Scott Rudin is producing.

During her long career, Carroll earned a Tony for the musical "No Strings" and an Oscar nomination for "Claudine." She became the first black woman to star in a non-servant role on TV in "Julia," the groundbreaking situation comedy that aired from 1968 to 1971. This marks her first return to Broadway since she was a replacement in "Agnes of God" in the early 1980s and she's already spent three months working on her character.

"I feel that most of us like to come back to the theater for multiple reasons ? it is a reminder of what we can do, what we cannot do and what it is we need to address in terms of holding on to whatever gifts God was kind enough to give us," Carroll said. "It's a responsibility to that gift. Things like that come with responsibility and I'm not sure that I expected it at this time, but I think Scott Rudin is an extraordinary human being."

Washington, 58, has two Oscars to his name for "Glory" (1989) and "Training Day" (2001). His other nominations came for "City Freedom," ''Malcolm X" and "The Hurricane." He won a best actor Tony in 2010 in August Wilson's "Fences," playing the larger-than-life garbage man whose dashed dreams of baseball glory have given him a rigid, embittered sense of responsibility. He had previously been on Broadway in 2005 in a production of "Julius Caesar."

He and Carroll have met over the years and share a mutual respect. She calls him an "extraordinary talent" and he says simply: "Diahann Carroll. That's all you need to say. What a story. What a life."

"A Raisin in the Sun" is held in special regard by writers and historians. Playwright Bruce Norris' "Clybourne Park," which imagines what might have happened to the Youngers, won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony Award for best play in 2012. And this year, British actor, director and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah unveiled his spin-off play "Beneatha's Place" in Baltimore.

"A Raisin in the Sun" and "Clybourne Park" were among the most produced plays in the nation in the 2012-2013 season, according to the Theatre Communications Group.

Can Gays Help Save Marriage? | RealClearPolitics

WASHINGTON -- The rapid evolution of attitudes toward gay marriage is a wonder to behold. On few issues has public opinion moved as quickly or decisively. Many who are against the formal recognition of homosexual unions are now resigned to the reality they will eventually become commonplace.

The main drivers of this transformation are obvious. Most Americans now know that people they care about are gay or lesbian, and empathy can do wonderful things. Partly because of this, younger Americans overwhelmingly favor same-sex marriage. They will dominate the electorates of the future.

But another factor deserves more notice: steadily increasing numbers of Americans have come to believe that gays and lesbians are not social revolutionaries looking to alter the nature of marriage. Rather, they are seen as simply wanting to be part of an institution that is already open to their straight fellow citizens. This shift in perspective has been essential in normalizing the idea of gay unions.

That finding comes our way courtesy of a series of surveys that have been conducted by Third Way, a policy organization close to moderate Democrats, and the Human Rights Campaign, one of the country's leading gay rights groups. Overall, their latest poll found that 53 percent of Americans now favor "allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally," while 40 percent are opposed.

The two organizations have been tracking this question: "Do you think gay couples who want to get married are trying to change the institution of marriage or join it?" In 2009, Americans were closely divided on this: 50 percent said gay couples wanted to join marriage, while 41 percent said these couples wanted to change it.

In the latest survey that the groups will release this week as part of their aptly named "Commitment Campaign," 58 percent said gays and lesbians wanted to join marriage and only 27 percent said they were looking to change it. This suggests that an increasing number of Americans reject the culture-war frame when it comes to gay marriage, and that fewer and fewer see it as threatening their own values.

The survey was also striking in showing that Americans make careful distinctions around the religious freedom questions raised by granting gays and lesbians access to marriage.

On the one hand, 61 percent of Americans say that churches and clergy members should have the right to refuse to perform a marriage ceremony for a gay or lesbian couple. Only 28 percent said they should not. But when it came to non-religious market transactions related to weddings -- involving caterers, florists, restaurants and the like -- respondents took a very different view. Substantial majorities said that providers of such services should not be able to withhold them from homosexual couples. The public's broad sensitivity to the specific rights of religious institutions is quite different from an endorsement of a wholesale right for individuals to discriminate against gays seeking marriage.

Social conservatives especially should take note of where Americans are heading. Because the desire of gays and lesbians to live in publicly committed relationships is seen increasingly as an endorsement of marriage as it has long been understood, there are new opportunities to defend marriage itself. We need to lay down arms in the culture wars and face up to the urgency of strengthening families.

One person who hopes we will take this path is David Blankenhorn, president of the Institute for American Values. Once a strong foe of same-sex marriage, Blankenhorn has dropped his opposition and urged that we turn our attention instead to a disturbing development: Well-off Americans are far more likely to be in stable marriages than the less affluent. This creates a damaging social cycle -- economic inequality is breeding family instability even as family instability is deepening economic inequality.

We could, of course, replace one divisive fight with another and start arguing about whether the problems family face are caused primarily by personal choices or economic challenges. Instead, we should follow the advice of Robert Putnam, a Harvard professor who is deeply alarmed by the expanding American class divide.
Putnam says we should be able to accept the "red truth" that family structure matters and the "blue truth" that declining economic opportunities are, for so many Americans, worsening family difficulties -- a point his colleague, William Julius Wilson, has long been stressing. There is a role for personal responsibility, and also a role for government social policy.

The end of rancor over gay marriage should mark the beginning of an effort to save marriage itself.?

Sony Xperia ZR battery life test breakdown

The Sony Xperia ZR is the little brother of the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, and boasts pretty much every key specification they have. The major is the 4.55? 720p display, which should be kinder to the equally large 2300 mAh battery inside the phone.

Identical chipsets and batteries plus a smaller screen of lower resolution give the Xperia ZR every chance of beating its premium rivals.

Let?s kick the battery test off with 3G talk time. The Sony Xperia ZR did 17 hours and 48 minutes of 3G calls before its 2300mAh battery went flat. That?s nearly 5 hours more than Sony officially says the phone is capable of, which is quite impressive on its own, but even more so considering that its better than the Xperia Z achievement by a bit over an hour and a half.

The good news continue with the web browsing test. Here, the Sony Xperia ZR tops everything we?ve ever tested by scoring 11 hours and 20 minutes. The combination of Chrome as a default browser and the smaller screen are probably to thank for this great result.

We now arrive at the final test ? video playback. Here, the Xperia ZR did alright, but nothing breathtaking. Thanks to its 720p screen it beat the 1080p display rocking Xperia Z (5:39) and Xperia ZL (5:28) by scoring two hours more ? 7 hours and 30 minutes. That?s not a particularly impressive score, but it?s not half bad either.

We ran the test with Mobile BRAVIA 2 turned on as we believed that?s how most users will be using their smartphones. Nevertheless, even with it switched off, the battery life wasn?t affected in a noticable way.

In the end, thanks to its efficient talk times and optimized web browsing, the Xperia ZR managed to pull off an endurance rating of 62 hours. We did experience strange battery drains on a couple of occasions when we left the phone idle overnight, so it wasn?t always so great when it comes to stand-by, though.

You can read more about how we do the battery tests here.
