Dynmap - Dead Men Walking Gaming Community

Lib and I had a go at providing this for the community as requested.

You'll see from this link that, currently, the only support for MC1.5.1 is the 'Forge' flavoured variety. The bad news is that Forge requires a server *and* client install which we agreed makes it a non-starter.

So until Bukkit is up to speed we need to postpone this for now.

Pre-College Parental Chat May Reduce Freshman Drinking - Health ...

motherandchild Pre College Parental Chat May Reduce Freshman Drinking

By Mary Brophy Marcus
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) ? Parents who want to help their teens better navigate the world of college drinking might consider a pre-college chat on the topic. New research suggests it will help douse their desire to imbibe when they hit campus.

?The research shows parents do influence a teen?s decisions about drinking, even at this age,? said study co-author Michael Cleveland, a research assistant professor at the Prevention Research Center at Pennsylvania State University.

The scientists recruited 1,900 soon-to-be college freshmen to participate in questionnaires about their drinking habits. The teens, who were planning to attend a large northeastern university, were asked about their high school drinking habits and were then categorized as either nondrinkers, weekend light drinkers, weekend heavy drinkers and heavy drinkers (which included drinking on weekdays and weekends).

Their parents were mailed a 22-page handbook that included general information about college student drinking, how to communicate effectively, advice on how to help teens be assertive and resist peer pressure, and detailed information on the physical effects of alcoholic beverages on the body.

Parents were asked to read the handbook and then talk with their teen about the contents at one of three randomly assigned times, either during the summer before college, during the fall semester of the first year of college, or during the summer before college and again during the fall semester freshman year.

The handbook was created by study author Robert Turrisi, a professor of biobehavioral health at Penn State. He and his colleagues hoped their research would help identify the best time to talk with a teen about college drinking, and whether chatting more than once is more effective than a one-time talk.

The findings, reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, show that teens who talked with their parents about anti-drinking strategies before they began their first year of college were more likely to fall into a non-drinking or light-drinking category, or to transition out of a heavy-drinking group if they were already heavy drinkers.

Talking with their child in the fall of freshman year was less effective or had no additional impact on drinking behaviors, Cleveland said.

He said some of the key points in the parent handbook include communicating to their kids that they will be faced with choices about drinking when they?re off at college and they need to be prepared to make smart choices.

?One section covers how alcohol works in the body ? what it?s doing, its physiological and psychological effects. There is also information on motives teens give for why they drink, and how to respond to peer pressure,? Cleveland said.

Reinforcing that drinking is an illegal behavior and can have serious fallout is discussed in the handbook, too. ?There?s a constellation of risk behaviors linked to underage and binge drinking: car accidents, suicides and sexual assault,? he added.

For example, car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about one-third of those are alcohol related, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. What?s more, each year about 12 percent of college students are assaulted by other students who have been drinking, according to the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Cleveland said a lot of parents have the idea that they help their teens by letting them drink at home, that it?s safe because at least they know where their child is drinking. ?But we know that when teens are asked about their parents permissibility, those students who had parents who were more permissive were more likely to be heavier drinkers later on,? he said.

An expert praised the new research.

?It?s a very good study,? said Dr. Joanne Sotelo, division director of psychiatry at Scott & White Healthcare in Round Rock, Texas. ?It gives some information we already knew about the type of intervention that?s needed, but it?s interesting to see the difference in timing.?

Talking with your teen about sensitive topics like drinking can be challenging and parental ?tone? is important, she pointed out. ?It?s such a tough age between high school and college. You?re still kind of figuring out who you are and what you want to be, but you still need your parents? support, you are not fully matured.?

She said, ideally, parents won?t wait until just before college, but will have been ?planting seeds,? having small conversations, all along.

Sotelo recommended keeping the talks open-ended, not just lecturing. ?If you come across as defensive, that?s how they?ll respond. Instead, you can say, ?I know you?re not supposed to drink, but have you already tried it with your friends??? Sotelo said then you can voice your expectations that you hope they will not get into problems with alcohol.

Football tailgates, fraternity parties ? she said there?s no doubt teens will be exposed to alcohol at college and ?it?s going to be 100 percent their decision to drink or not to drink.?

Some universities are beginning to become more aware of the need to work with parents on drinking issues by offering alcohol-free dorms and events, study author Cleveland said. But he said the best place to begin is at home. ?It?s challenging for parents to face these questions from an 18-, 19-, 20-year-old, but just having the conversation is a good thing,? he said.

The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism supported this research.

US sends B-2s to South Korea for military drills

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? In a show of force following weeks of North Korean bluster, the U.S. on Thursday took the unprecedented step of announcing that two of its nuclear-capable B-2 bombers joined joint military drills with South Korea, dropping dummy munitions on an island range.

The announcement is likely to further enrage Pyongyang, which has already issued a flood of ominous statements to highlight displeasure over the drills and U.N. sanctions over its nuclear test last month. But there were signs Thursday that it is willing to go only so far.

A North Korean industrial plant operated with South Korean know-how was running normally, despite the North's shutdown a day earlier of communication lines ordinarily used to move workers and goods across the border. At least for the moment, Pyongyang was choosing the factory's infusion of hard currency over yet another provocation.

U.S. Forces Korea said in a statement that the B-2 stealth bombers flew from a U.S. air base in Missouri and dropped dummy munitions on the South Korean island range before returning home. It was unclear whether America's stealth bombers were used in past annual drills with South Korea, but this is the first time the military has announced their use.

The statement follows an earlier U.S. announcement that nuclear-capable B-52 bombers participated in the joint military drills.

The announcement will likely draw a strong response from Pyongyang. North Korea sees the military drills as part of a U.S. plot to invade and becomes particularly upset about U.S. nuclear activities in the region. Washington and Seoul say the drills are routine and defensive.

North Korea has already threatened nuclear strikes on Washington and Seoul in recent weeks. It said Wednesday there was no need for communication in a situation "where a war may break out at any moment." Earlier this month, it announced that it considers void the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953.

But Pyongyang would have gone beyond words, possibly damaging its own weak finances, if it had blocked South Koreans from getting in and out of the Kaesong industrial plant, which produced $470 million worth of goods last year.

South Korean managers at the plant reported no signs of trouble Thursday.

Analysts see a full-blown North Korean attack as extremely unlikely, though there are fears of a more localized conflict, such as a naval skirmish in disputed Yellow Sea waters. Such naval clashes have happened three times since 1999.

The Kaesong plant, just across the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone that separates the Koreas, normally relies on a military hotline for the governments to coordinate the movement of goods and South Korean workers.

Without the hotline, the governments, which lack diplomatic relations, used middlemen. North Korea verbally approved the crossing Thursday of hundreds of South Koreans by telling South Koreans at a management office at the Kaesong factory. Those South Koreans then called officials in South Korea.

Both governments prohibit direct contact with citizens on the other side, but Kaesong has separate telephone lines that allow South Korean managers there to communicate with people in South Korea.

Factory managers at Kaesong reached by The Associated Press by telephone at the factory said the overall mood there is normal.

"Tension rises almost every year when it's time for the U.S.-South Korean drills to take place, but as soon as those drills end, things quickly return to normal," Sung Hyun-sang said in Seoul, a day after returning from Kaesong. He is president of Mansun Corporation, an apparel manufacturer that employs 1,400 North Korean workers and regularly stations 12 South Koreans at Kaesong.

"I think and hope that this time won't be different," Sung said.

Technically, the divided Korean Peninsula remains in a state of war. North Korea last shut down communications at Kaesong four years ago, and that time some workers were temporarily stranded.

North Korea could be trying to stoke worries that the hotline shutdown could mean that a military provocation could come any time without notice.

South Korea urged the North to quickly restore the hotline, and the U.S. State Department said the shutdown was unconstructive.

North Korea's latest threats are seen as efforts to provoke the new government in Seoul, led by President Park Geun-hye, to change its policies toward Pyongyang. North Korea's moves at home to order troops into "combat readiness" also are seen as ways to build domestic unity as young leader Kim Jong Un, who took power after his father's death in December 2011, strengthens his military credentials.

The Kaesong complex is the last major symbol of inter-Korean cooperation. Other rapprochement projects created during a previous era of detente stopped as tension rose in recent years.

At the border Thursday, a trio of uniformed South Korean soldiers stood at one side of a gate as white trucks rumbled through, carrying large pipes and containers to Kaesong. At Dorasan station, a South Korean border checkpoint, a green signboard hung above the trucks with the words "Kaesong" and "Pyongyang" written in English and Korean.

The stalled hotline, which consists of two telephone lines, two fax lines and two lines that can be used for both telephone and fax, was virtually the last remaining direct link between the rival Koreas.

North Korea in recent weeks cut other phone and fax hotlines with South Korea's Red Cross and with the American-led U.N. Command at the border. Three other telephone hotlines used only to exchange information about air traffic were still operating normally Thursday, according to South Korea's Air Traffic Center.

In 2010, ties between the rivals reached one of their lowest points in decades after North Korea's artillery bombardment of a South Korean island and a South Korean warship sinking blamed on a North Korean torpedo attack. A total of 50 South Koreans died.

There is still danger of a confrontation or clash. Kim Jong Un may be more willing to take risks than his father, the late Kim Jong Il, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a North Korea expert at Korea University in South Korea.

Although North Korea has vowed nuclear strikes on the U.S., analysts outside the country have seen no proof that North Korean scientists have yet mastered the technology needed to build a nuclear warhead small enough to mount on a missile.

President Park so far has outlined a policy that looks to re-engage North Korea, stressing the need for greater trust while saying Pyongyang will "pay the price" for any provocation. Last week she approved a shipment of anti-tuberculosis medicine to the North.

Since 2004, the Kaesong factories have operated with South Korean money and know-how, with North Korean factory workers managed by South Koreans.

Inter-Korean trade, which includes a small amount of humanitarian aid sent to the North and components and raw materials sent to Kaesong complex to build finished products, amounted to nearly $2 billion in 2012, according to South Korea's Unification Ministry.

Natural remedies for arthritis | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 21 million adults, according to the CDC. Those with arthritis, though, don?t have to be slaves to their genetics or gym injuries; there are several natural arthritis remedies to help heal joint pain and inflammation.

?

What is arthritis and what causes it?
The two most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid (RA) and osteoarthritis. The latter is often associated with the wearing down and tearing of the cartilage, or simply not having enough cartilage after a while in a particular joint.

?

RA is an autoimmune disease, in which the body attacks itself. In addition, ?-myalgia? diseases like fibro- and poly-, could be considered varieties of arthritis because they both share similar painful symptoms in joints and muscles.

?

All forms of arthritis have one major root cause in common: inflammation.

?

One major cause of inflammation: Poor diet
From a natural, holistic perspective, the foods we eat play a significant role in inflammatory responses. David Getoff, vice president of the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation and a certified clinical nutritionist, believes that frequent consumption of common food allergens ? like wheat or soy, as well as anything loaded with sugar, or anything that quickly converts into sugar (alcohol, most grains) ? can promote inflammation, which wreaks havoc on the body?s joints.

?

?We are living organisms that contain a masterful, self-healing ability,? says Getoff. ?If we feed our bodies? the right foods and additional nutrients, our bodies can begin to heal on their own, perhaps without having to take potentially-harmful drugs.?

?

Getoff advises eating healthy ? meaning free of allergy-promoting foods ? for at least two months. According to him, it takes six weeks for wheat to clear out of the system. Perhaps due to its modern, stripped-of-nutrition, hybridized ubiquity, wheat may trigger an auto-immune reaction in many people. Make sure to cut out foods that may seem more innocuous than regular table sugar but that also may promote inflammation, like fruit, honey, molasses and agave.

?

Supplements for arthritis
A good brand of glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate, at the right dose, may help some arthritis sufferers. The same goes for hyaluronic acid, which is used in beauty treatments much for the same reason it may help some with arthritis, due to its hydrating properties. The fatty acid, Cetyl myristoleate, also seems to be an effective joint lubricant and anti-inflammatory. It was isolated in Swiss albino mice, which for some Darwinian wonder, never develop arthritis.

?

Best forms of exercise for arthritis
The bodybuilding mantra, ?No pain, no gain,? may have had cache in hardcore gyms back in the 1980s but these days, if you have arthritis, you want to choose exercises that cause your joints no pain whatsoever. Perhaps the best way for arthritis sufferers to gain strength and cardiovascular endurance with very low risk of further joint wear and tear is aquatic exercise.

?

Whether it?s a gentle water aerobics class or Olympic-style sprints, swimming can also help burn excess body fat. Pool jogging in waist-high water is also a simple yet highly effective way to burn calories without placing a heavy burden on the joints.

?

Gentle stretching or yoga is also advised for those with arthritis to help get back some range of motion.

?

If you prefer cycling, rock climbing, but those activities (or any other) exacerbate your condition, reduce the frequency of the activity.?

?

Ice or heat?
Both ice and heat have their merits when treating arthritis. Like treating an injury, ice seems to be more effective for reducing inflammation and swelling and numbing pain, especially when symptoms appear in the first 24-48 hours. Heat, on the other hand, tends to work best for relaxing muscles and stiff joints by increasing blood flow and flexibility.

?

Reduce exposure to pollutants and help purge your body of poisons
Even if you eat a wholesome diet loaded with antioxidants, if you are exposed to high levels of environmental pollutants such as mercury, lead, aluminum and inorganic plastic compounds, you may still develop arthritis. Various lab tests can analyze the amount of chemicals in your body. Your cookware can also be a common source of poisons entering your body. High blood levels of a man-made chemical (Teflon) used in non-stick coatings are associated with a raised risk of arthritis.

?

You need lots of friendly bugs in your gut

The billions and billions of bacteria in our guts are like an army, defending our immune system from constant bombardment. If you?ve taken several doses of antibiotics over the years and haven?t eaten healthy, take a probiotic that contains several billion micro-organisms per capsule to repopulate the gut with good bacteria. Perhaps you?ll keep autoimmune diseases such as RA at bay.
? What other natural arthritis remedies can I try?
Holistic options such as acupuncture, chiropractic medicine and rehabilitative therapy may help alleviate joint or muscle pain, even in pets.

?

Do you have arthritis? Care to suggest any other natural remedies below?

Holy Week pilgrims head to 'El Santuario de Chimayo' in NM amid first pope from the Americas

CHIMAYO, N.M. - Tens of thousands of people are expected to visit one of the most popular Catholic shrines in the Americas this weekend for Easter, which comes just weeks after the first pope from the Americas was elected.

Around 50,000 people are expected to descend on El Santuario de Chimayo (CHEE'-mah-YOH') in New Mexico, and officials say even more may make the trip due this year to the excitement over Pope Francis.

The adobe chapel in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, sometimes called the "Lourdes of America," attracts its biggest crowd around Holy Week.

Some pilgrims will make the 90-mile, three-day walk from Albuquerque to the shrine that houses "el pocito," a small pit of holy adobe-colored soil that some believe possesses curing powers.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert Garcia says traffic patrols will increase from Thursday to Sunday for safety.

Turkey, Israel to work out compensation

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey's deputy prime minister says Turkish and Israeli officials will meet next week to work out the amount of compensation to be paid to the victims of a raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla that killed eight Turks and a Turkish-American in 2010.

Israel apologized for the botched raid last week and agreed to compensate the injured and relatives of the dead.

Turkey accepted the apology but said it wanted to ensure the victims were compensated and Israel remained committed to the easing of restrictions of goods entering Gaza before restoring full diplomatic relations.

Bulent Arinc said Friday an Israeli delegation will travel to Turkey next week. He says the amount of compensation to be requested will be worked out in consultation with experts and the families' lawyers.

Italy's president seeks way out of political deadlock

By James Mackenzie

ROME (Reuters) - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano meets political leaders on Friday in a bid to break a month-old stalemate after an election left no party able to form a government.

Center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani, who won the biggest share of the vote in the February 25 vote but fell short of a majority, told Napolitano on Thursday he had failed to secure enough support from rival parties to form a government.

The 87-year-old Napolitano, whose own term ends in mid-May, said he would personally meet representatives from the main parties to assess what options remain to prevent an early return to the polls.

The deadlock in Italy, the euro zone's third largest economy, comes as the Cyprus banking crisis has revived fears of renewed financial market turmoil that could threaten the stability of the currency bloc.

After five days of talks, Bersani failed to secure a deal with either Berlusconi's center-right bloc, the second-largest force in parliament, or ex-comic Beppe Grillo's 5-Star Movement, which holds the balance of power.

The center-left leader rejected Berlusconi's demand that he be allowed to decide Napolitano's successor as head of state, and Grillo's populist group maintained its refusal to support a government led by any of the big parties it blames for Italy's social and economic crisis.

Napolitano's options now include appointing a figure from outside politics to lead a technocrat government like that of outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti or a cross-party alliance backed by the big parties.

Among possible candidates are Fabrizio Saccomanni, the widely respected director general of the Bank of Italy, the head of the constitutional court Franco Gallo or former prime minister Giuliano Amato.

Napolitano meets representatives from former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party at 1000 GMT, before seeing the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and finally Bersani's Democratic Party (PD) in the evening.

CRISIS

The political gridlock has fed growing worries about Italy's ability to confront a prolonged economic crisis that has left it in deep recession for more than a year, with a 2-trillion-euro public debt and record unemployment, especially among the young.

Rumours have been circulating for days that ratings agency Moody's is preparing to cut its rating on Italy's sovereign debt, which is already only two notches above "junk" grade, partly due to the uncertain political outlook.

The immediate pressure from the bond markets has been taken off during the Easter break but failure to make progress in securing an agreement could lead to new turbulence next week after a steady rise in Italy's borrowing costs in recent days.

However the prospects appear slim of appointing the kind of government capable of turning around an economy that has been in decline for more than a decade, with deep-rooted problems ranging from corruption to suffocating bureaucracy.

Napolitano has made clear that he does not want Italy to go back to new elections immediately, not least because the widely criticised election law is likely to lead to a similar inconclusive result.

However even a so-called "president's government" led by a political outsider, would need the backing of parliament, which may be difficult to secure given the deep divisions which remain between the parties.

Many are turning their thoughts towards new elections, with Berlusconi's center-right bloc confident that the momentum created by the 76-year-old billionaire's surge in the final weeks of the last election campaign will continue.

"We're not afraid of going back to vote," Daniela Santanche, one of Berlusconi's most faithful allies told the daily La Repubblica. "The opinion polls are telling us that we'd win and the PD would lose 150 deputies," she said.

The secret life of money revealed

A cash processing room at the Federal Reserve (Discovery)Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the damaged dollar bills floating around the economy? How long does paper money actually last before it disintegrates into torn shreds or a pulpy mass that is indistinguishable from regular old paper? And at what point is paper money just too damaged to be used as legal tender?

On March 30 9 p.m. ET/PT, the Discovery Channel will give viewers an inside look at ?The Secret Life of Money,? which seeks to answer these questions along with offering many other insights into the world of money, including the history of how gold became a standard form of currency around the world.

David Kestenbaum and Jacob Goldstein from NPR?s "Planet Money" contributed to the special and chatted with Yahoo News about some of the stranger things they?ve learned about cash.

?To me, what?s most interesting is that there is a bigger idea at work here: Money is this thing that we take for granted,? Goldstein said. ?When you stop and think about money, it gets really weird, really fast.?

For example, if your money is damaged, you can legally exchange it with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. But only to a point. The bureau says it receives upwards of 300 envelopes per day, containing ?torn, blackened, blood-soaked, shrunken or otherwise maimed money.? However, so long as 51 percent of that blood-soaked bill remains intact, you can get a freshly issued replacement bill.

?It?s not paper the way we normally think of paper. It?s 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen. It?s like a T-shirt,? Kestenbaum says, explaining why money is actually more physically durable than some might think.

Still, that hasn?t stopped thousands of people each year from testing its limits in strange ways.

For example, one Florida man attempted to dry his money after it became wet by putting it in the microwave. But instead of returning to its crisp, clean form, the money was crisped and burst into flames.

These sort of incidents resulted in the bureau exchanging $28 million worth of paper money in 2011 alone.

Of course, Goldstein and Kestenbaum note that similar incidents are on the decline as money moves toward becoming a predominantly electronic transaction between buyer and seller.

?There is no truck full of dollar bills going from my employer?s bank to my bank,? Goldstein says, noting that the very basic idea of money is really more about trust than physical value. ?The U.S. dollar is already basically an electronic currency.?

And with the advent of independent currency providers such as Bitcoin, some people are trying to establish that trust without relying on a government.

Still, Kestenbaum says that for all its shortcomings, paper money is likely to stay with us for years to come. ?I am more bearish on the future of physical money,? he said. ?At some point, we won?t be using cash at all. Not in the next year, but in 50 years? Probably.?

Ironically, one of the reasons Goldstein and Kestenbaum say the U.S. dollar has a future in its physical form is its popularity outside of America. They note that there are currently more $100 bills outside the U.S. than within the borders of the country that printed them.

If you add up all of the cash, "there?s a lot missing because of how much is used overseas,? Kestenbaum said.

Honda minivan comes with a built-in vacuum

If we said the new 2014 Odyssey minivan sucked, Honda might just take that as a compliment. The updated Odyssey Touring Elite model debuting at the New York Auto Show will introduce a new feature likely to have significant appeal to family buyers ? the first in-car vacuum.

Big Week in the Big Apple as NY Auto Show Reveals Over Two Dozen New Vehicles

The HondaVAC is one of several new features being introduced on the 2014 Honda Odyssey which has gained steady momentum in an otherwise shrinking market segment.

Minivan sales are currently less than half of what they peaked at a decade ago, but there is still a sizable demand among family buyers who see them as the most functional and efficient people-movers on the market. The challenge is coming up with a consistent stream of new innovations.

Car buyers crave connectivity

?Honda is once again showcasing its reputation for innovation with HondaVAC, and its ability to provide true value to our customers,? proclaimed Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations at American Honda.

The outgoing Odyssey attempted to show that Honda could inject a little style into the segment, as well. The 2014 update undergoes only modest exterior tweaks, however, with a more deeply sculpted hood and revised fenders, as well as a more distinctive twin-bar grille. There are also new LED taillamp bars and revised badging.

Like so many of its competitors, the Japanese maker is slashing mass to improve fuel economy ? as well as handling. The hood and front fenders are now stamped out of lightweight aluminum.

Inside, the Odyssey adds some new finishes to brighten the cabin, along with an all-new center stack housing a number of new high-tech features. That includes an updated HondaLink infotainment system that can link with an owner?s smartphone to access live, personalized radio ?stations? and also give voice access to updates and news feeds from Facebook and Twitter. The system can also be used to find a nearby restaurant and then check its reviews.

Prostate Cancer Linked to Early Balding in African-American Men ...

20130327-145516.jpgGoing bald early may increase your risk for prostate cancer ? especially if you?re an African- American man. That?s the finding of a new study from the American Association for Cancer Research.

In the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention,?researchers report on more than 300 African-American men with prostate cancer and more than 200 control cases, who participated in the Study of Clinical Outcomes, Risk and Ethnicity between 1998 and 2010. The men had either a full head of hair or frontal or vertex (crown) baldness.

?We focused on African-American men because they are at high risk for developing prostate cancer and are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer than other groups in the United States,? said Charnita Zeigler-Johnson, Ph.D., research assistant professor at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, in a press release. ?Although this is a high-risk group for poor prostate cancer outcomes, no published study had focused on evaluating baldness as a potential risk factor in a sample of African-American men.?

Researchers found a 69 percent increased risk of prostate cancer among the men with any form of baldness. Risk for advanced prostate cancer diagnosis more than doubled in men with frontal baldness, an association that was even stronger among African-American men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 60.

?Early-onset baldness may be a risk factor for early-onset prostate cancer in African-American men, particularly younger men,? added Zeigler-Johnson. ?Pending future studies to confirm our results, there is a potential to use early-onset baldness as a clinical indicator of increased risk for prostate cancer in some populations of men.?

In the United States, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with higher rates in African-American men, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it is the second most common cause of death in most American men.

At the Supreme Court, Waiting Through Sleet, Snow, and an Onslaught of Questions From Journalists

The wintry mix of sleet and snow has become something of a constant for those camping outside of the Supreme Court on Monday. But it?s not the only D.C. element descending upon them. There are few events like a long line to draw in reporters.

?I?ve had it to here with interviews,? Donna Clarke tells me, sitting beneath a blue umbrella and donning a bright-yellow poncho. Despite her best efforts, her newspaper has begun the process of being soaked through. ?I can?t keep answering the same questions.?

Donna Clarke sits under her umbrella battling the elements while waiting for her chance to hear oral arguments in the Supreme Court over Proposition 8.? (Chet Susslin)

Clarke has been interviewed more than 20 times already today as one of the more than 50 people who have been camped out ahead of the oral arguments for two historic Supreme Court cases involving gay marriage the justices will hear Tuesday and Wednesday. The only way she is willing to speak is if she?s the one doing the interview.

?I happen to be a private person,? she tells me after asking me what brings me here (editors wanted a color story) and whether I had personal opinions on the matter (not as a journalist, I told her). ?But here I am sitting out in front of the Supreme Court, freezing and surrounded by journalists. I keep thinking, ?Why am I here?? ?

The reason Clarke gives for coming to Washington with her partner all the way from California is one that gets echoed throughout the line: It?s thrilling to witness history in the making. Sure, the kindness of neighbors in this (mostly) progressive Hooverville, the Starbucks donations from passersby, and the pizza being delivered from ThinkProgress all helps, but it?s the history that makes the rain, the journalists, and the endless hours of sitting on a sidewalk bearable.

Just ask Jason Wanacott, who has been in line since 10 a.m. Friday, and says that he personally has done more than 200 interviews.

?That?s not even an exaggeration,? he says. ?I was the only person in line here for a while on Friday, and at one point I had 16 people around me all asking me questions at the same time.?

But Wanacott isn?t complaining. He?s psyched to be here. A self-described ?huge supporter of gay rights,? Wanacott has been documenting his experience on his blog,?Blonde Millennial.

?It was ridiculous, this morning I was blogging under like five inches of snow in my sleeping bag on my cellphone,? he said. ?I am not going to forget this experience.?

He?s certainly not the only one for whom this memory won?t soon fade.

For their 25th?anniversary, Frank Colasonti Jr. and his partner James Ryder left their home outside of Detroit wearing long johns, hoodies, and jackets ready for a few nights of sleeping on a sidewalk.

?At first we both wanted to go, then my partner got reluctant, and now after actually being here, we?re both onboard wholeheartedly,? Colasonti told me, while Ryder was out buying more camping equipment. Colasonti said he brought three pairs of gloves and two were already completely soaked. ?We?re happy to be celebrating [our anniversary] here in the hopes that the two issues will be overturned so we can officially get married and live happily ever after.?

Correction:?A previous version of this story mispelled the last name of a woman waiting outside the Supreme Court. The woman's name is Donna Clarke.

We probably don't need to tell you that one of the first things we did upon finding out that Windows Blue had leaked was download that sucker. (Sorry Microsoft, we can't help ourselves.) Well, after some finagling we got it up and running in a virtual machine and gave spin. Even at this early stage its pretty obvious that Blue is going to be a relatively minor, but welcome upgrade Windows 8. And, while we encountered plenty of rough edges, we'd say they're more than explained away by the fact that this is an early build and VirtualBox can introduce its own set of problems. But, if you're just looking for a sneak peak at what Microsoft has in store for Windows in 2013, head on after break and check out the gallery of screenshots below.

Sequencing tracks animal-to-human transmission of bacterial pathogens

Mar. 22, 2013 ? Researchers have used whole genome sequencing to reveal if drug-resistant bacteria are transmitted from animals to humans in two disease outbreaks that occurred on different farms in Denmark. The results, which are published today in EMBO Molecular Medicine, confirm animal-to-human transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a disease-causing bacterium that carries the recently described mecC gene. The mecC gene is responsible for resistance to the penicillin-like antibiotic methicillin.

Drug-resistant bacterial infections pose a significant challenge to public health and may have severe and sometimes fatal consequences. As the costs of whole genome sequencing methods continue to plummet and the speed of analysis increases, it becomes increasingly attractive for scientists to use whole genome sequencing to answer disease-related questions.

"We used whole genome sequencing to see if we could determine if the two disease outbreaks were caused by the same bacterium and to investigate if the pathogens were transmitted from animal to humans or the other way around," remarked Mark Holmes, from the University of Cambridge and the senior author on the paper. "At first glance, it seems reasonable to expect the same pathogen to be the source of the two outbreaks at the two geographically close locations. By looking at the single differences in nucleotides or SNPs in the DNA sequences of each isolate, it became obvious that two different strains of bacteria were responsible for the two disease outbreaks. In one case, the results also clearly showed that the most likely direction of transmission was from animal to human."

Methicillin-resistant S. aureus can lead to debilitating skin and soft tissue infections, bacteremia, pneumonia and endocarditis. The researchers used an Illumina HiSeq sequencing system to take a close look at the nucleotide sequence of each pathogen. By comparing single difference in nucleotides in the two sequences (single nucleotide polymorphisms) they were able to reach conclusions about the identity of the pathogens and the routes of infection.

The researchers emphasize that while whole genome sequencing cannot replace other more traditional types of diseases analysis it can greatly increase the ability of scientists to distinguish between different pathogens as the cause of disease.

"Our findings demonstrate that the MRSA strains we studied are capable of transmission between animals and humans, which highlights the role of livestock as a potential reservoir of antibiotic-resistant bacteria," remarked Ewan Harrison, one of the lead authors of the study.

Nokia Lumia 521 for T-Mobile given FCC approval

Nokia Lumia 521 for TMobile caught with FCC approval

RM-917. It may not sound like much on the outside, but the model number and above picture correspond with the Nokia Lumia 521, T-Mobile's version of the lower-end Lumia 520 announced at MWC last month. We still don't have any details on when it'll show up on retail shelves, but it's at least made its way through one of the final barriers to entry: the FCC approval process. As you might expect, the docs are low on details, but the frequencies support 850 / AWS / 1900 HSPA+ / UMTS as well as quadband GSM / EDGE. To refresh your memory, the 520 will sport a 4-inch WVGA LCD panel, 512MB RAM, a 5MP camera, microSD storage and quite a few other respectable goodies. Head to the source if you're a sucker for numbers and acronyms.

Many parents introduce solids before 4 months : CDC

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Four in ten new parents start feeding their babies solid foods before their four-month birthday, according to a new study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Physician groups including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) currently recommend against parents introducing solid foods until infants are about six months old.

In part, that's because early solids have been tied to obesity and other chronic conditions and because public health experts agree it's best if mothers can breastfeed exclusively for six months.

"Introducing solid foods early means that the baby gets less breast milk over the course of their infancy, and that decreases the ability to get optimal benefits, like protection against infection," said Dr. Alice Kuo, from the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities.

Kuo, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health there's been less research on when babies are developmentally ready to chew and swallow solid foods without choking - another important consideration.

"Infants should be able to sit up (and) take food off the spoon," said the CDC's Kelley Scanlon, who worked on the research.

"Sometimes if they're not ready, if they get presented with the food, they might not open their mouth? or they might spit it back up."

Her team's research included 1,334 new moms who filled out questionnaires each month about what their baby had eaten in the past week. The surveys were conducted between 2005 and 2007, when AAP recommendations called for starting solid foods no earlier than four months of age.

Just over 40 percent of parents reported their babies were eating solids, such as cereals and purees, before that point.

Those parents said they thought their babies were old enough to eat solid foods, infants seemed hungry or - in the case of more than half of early solid feeders - doctors or nurses had recommended they start introducing those foods.

"There's not clear communication of the recommendations or the potential health impacts of early introduction," Scanlon told Reuters Health.

Nine percent of early introducers gave their baby solid food before one month, according to findings published Monday in Pediatrics.

Women who reported exclusive breastfeeding during their baby's first couple of months were less likely to introduce solid foods earlier than recommended compared to formula-feeding mothers, the CDC researchers found.

Kuo said the new findings are further evidence that pediatricians should tailor their messages about breastfeeding and solid foods to each particular parent and child - rather than always giving "the same spiel" about introducing solids at the four-month visit.

"The decision to start solid foods in babies has to be a compromise between what makes sense for the baby and what makes sense for the mom, who most likely is working," she said.
