Toby Keith tours devastated Okla. hometown

Celebs

Toby Keith is one of country music's biggest stars -- but he's also a native of the Sooner state. And after this week's devastating tornadoes that tore through Oklahoma also ripped into his hometown of Moore, Keith hurried home to see what had happened, and how he could help. He brought TODAY's Matt Lauer on a tour Wednesday to survey the damage.

"It was devastating to see, but it was even worse flying in because I know all these streets," he said. "That little grocery store on the corner there is where we got our baseball cards. Where we got our gas for mowing lawns in the summer."

Lauer and Keith stood just a few blocks from where he grew up in town; the family moved to a farm a few miles away once he was almost out of junior high. He has a home in town, as do other members of his family. "There's a lot of places it could have come across, and this is where it came across," he said. "You just look at the devastation."

His son-in-law heard about the schools in town getting hit, and immediately jumped into action -- though there were some obstacles, Keith reported: While driving there his truck flipped over, he got electrocuted, put a nail in his foot and had a tunnel collapse on him. But he still made it in for the rescue effort.

As Keith says, the people of his town are "resilient."

"They are so prepared for it," he said. "They'll bounce back. Homes will start going up quick and they'll prepare for the next one."

United States and Tunisia Launch Small Business Initiative to ...

05/20/2013

Washington, D.C. - Today, the United States and Tunisia launched an initiative to support the growth of small- and medium-sized businesses, boost trade, and promote broad-based economic growth. The initiative, funded and led by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide training on the U.S. small business development center model in Tunisia and provide technical assistance to the owners and employees of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to establish external trade opportunities in the region and internationally. Developed under the U.S.-Tunisia Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), which is led by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the initiative will strengthen Tunisia?s economic cooperation with the United States and improve its prospects for sustainable growth. Using online platforms and partnerships, it will create greater opportunities for trade between American and Tunisian small businesses.

Tunisian Ambassador to the United States Mokhtar Chaouachi hosted the launch of the initiative at the Tunisian Embassy, which was attended by Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Miriam Sapiro and Acting Assistant Administrator for USAID?s Middle East Bureau Alina Romanowski.

Ambassador Sapiro stated that ?Fostering trade and building institutional ties between small businesses in the United States and Tunisia as well as the broader region will promote economic growth and jobs for both countries, and it is an important component of our work in both the TIFA and the Obama Administration?s Middle East North Africa Trade and Investment Partnership.?

Acting Assistant Administrator Romanowski said that, ?Tunisia is charting a path toward greater economic growth, transparency and openness. The growth of small- and medium-sized businesses is a key component of Tunisia?s economic development that can benefit groups that have been historically marginalized, such as women and youth, who have been key proponents of democratic reform throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Measurable economic progress can help bolster democratic reforms both in Tunisia and elsewhere in the region.?

The Tunisia SME Project will be implemented by the International Executive Service Corps (IESC) and the University of Texas San Antonio Small Business Development Center.

Background:

This SME initiative was developed under the bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), signed by the United States and Tunisia in 2002. The TIFA is designed to serve as a forum to discuss issues of mutual interest with the objective of improving cooperation and enhancing opportunities for trade and investment.

One tattoo: adopting again from Ethiopia! | Rowan Family Tree

    20130518-222536.jpg
That?s right folks! We are excited to announce that we are now focusing exclusively on adopting again from Ethiopia!

Most of you know that we have been waiting for over two years to be matched with the child from Lesotho. Well, when the two Canadian agencies licensed in Ethiopia started taking new clients again in the late fall last year, we started making inquiries. Both countries have been in the hopper. After much deliberation and heart searching, we decided to pull our dossier from Lesotho a month and a half ago. So now we are focusing 100% on a new Ethiopian adoption!

This is absolutely the right decision for our family. We know the risks? Lesotho is absolutely great program. If I was to build an adoption program from scratch, it would look like the Lesotho?s. Ethiopia, on the other hand, has had an evolution of regulations, and isn?t without its ups and downs. The public opinion of adoption in Ethiopia has changed significantly since we got our girls. I remember four years ago walking down the street and being stopped several times, with the comment ?God bless you. God bless you.? Such is not the case now, and I do think that Ethiopian adoption will continue to slow down. Luckily, many of the new regulations have tightened up some of the shenanigans as well. We have open eyes? and it is the right choice for us.

We have already invested so much Ethiopia. Never mind that I run a charity there and visit once a year. We know how to cook Ethiopian food, we have Ethiopian friends, Ethiopian culture is part of our routine lives. As my dear friend M said when we were hmming and hawing: ?You already have the tattoo.?

And heaven knows, I really don?t want to get another tattoo.

Of course the tattoo is a metaphor for the rest of it. (My tattoo says ?family? in Amharic, BTW.) But the point is that our lives are significantly more simple if we adopt again from Ethiopia. We know it, and we like it. Ethiopia is already part of our family.

One huge consideration was that we will be traveling back to just one country. If we have children from different countries, that means half the trips to Ethiopia for our girls. Vice versa, another adoption will coincide with our first trip back with the girls. At the moment, we are planning to take them for the first trip (the court date) to meet the new little one and see their own family. That way we can concentrate on them, and pick the new dude up the second trip.

So we are very excited to be walking this road again.

Who knows when we will get matched? As with Lesotho, we are open to a variety of special needs. So the timing not be as long as for others.

Then again, we could never be matched and this could be a waste of time and energy. But it?s worth the effort! And our kids, our family, and our adoption agency are when hundred percent behind our decisions.

    Wish us luck!

Carol Burnett to win top US humor prize in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Carol Burnett, who became famous for playing a variety of characters in sketch comedy routines on her namesake television show, was named the winner of the nation's top humor prize on Tuesday.

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts said Burnett will receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Oct. 20 in Washington. A gala performance featuring top names in comedy will be taped and broadcast nationally Oct. 30 on PBS.

The 80-year-old Burnett said she can't believe she is receiving the prize from the Kennedy Center.

"It's almost impossible to be funnier than the people in Washington," she said in a statement.

Burnett had her breakout on Broadway in "Once Upon a Mattress," performing at night in 1959 while also appearing in the mornings on TV's "The Garry Moore Show." She is best known for her own long-running variety show, "The Carol Burnett Show." It ran from 1967 to 1978, averaging 30 million viewers a week on CBS. Her guest stars included Lucille Ball, Jimmy Stewart, Ronald Reagan and Betty White.

Burnett was born in San Antonio in 1933. She soon moved to Hollywood with her mother and grandmother and was raised in a small studio apartment. She received an anonymous donation to attend college at UCLA, where she studied journalism and took an acting class.

Burnett moved to New York City, where she staged musical revues and performed in nightclubs. She was spotted by talent bookers and soon performed her rendition of "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" on television.

Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein called Burnett a "unique and beloved entertainer."

"From her television program and appearances, as well as her performances on Broadway and in film, Carol Burnett has entertained generations of fans with her vibrant wit and hilarious characters," he said in announcing the prize.

The Mark Twain Prize honors people who have an impact on society in the tradition of Samuel Clemens, better known as Twain, as a social commentator and satirist. Previous honorees include Bill Cosby, Steve Martin, Tina Fey and Ellen DeGeneres, who won last year.

'Cheers' closed 20 years ago: Where are stars?

    TV

Kelsey Grammer as Dr. Frasier Crane, Ted Danson as Sam Malone, Woody Harrelson as Woody Boyd, John Ratzenberger as Cliff Clavin, Rhea Perlman as Carla Lozupone Tortelli LeBec, Kirstie Alley as Rebecca Howe, George Wendt as Norm Peterson in "Cheers."

    NBC via Getty Images

Kelsey Grammer, Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, John Ratzenberger, Rhea Perlman, Kirstie Alley, and George Wendt in "Cheers."

When "Cheers" debuted in 1982, few realized they were witnessing the birth of one of the quintessential ensemble sitcoms. It took place in a bar, for crying out loud, and the main characters weren't even related -- they were barflies or drunks or sad cases or all three.

And yet over the course of the next 11 years, "Cheers" would come to redefine what a sitcom could be. Characters didn't have to be family -- they made their own family. A will-they/won't-they relationship between a horndog bar owner and a snooty blonde intellectual could be teased out successfully for five seasons. And the supporting players: bar regular Norm, mailman Cliff, barmaid Carla, dim bulb Woody, snooty Frasier -- could be just as indelible as the leads.

Whatever the expectations were of "Cheers" when the bar opened, by the time it shuttered on May 20, 1993, clearly "Cheers" was about more than just a bunch of barflies. So where are our favorites today, 20 years later?

    Ted Danson (Sam Malone)

    Ted Danson.

    NBC, Getty Images

    Ted Danson.

Star Danson has aged well, shifting back and forth between comedic and dramatic roles -- he was equally delightful as a ruthless CEO on "Damages" and hilarious as a pot-smoking magazine editor on "Bored to Death," and currently stars on "CSI" as a night shift supervisor of the forensics team. He's got two Emmys and a book, "Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans And What We Can Do To Save Them." For him, Sam Malone was just the beginning.

    Shelley Long (Diane Chambers)

    Shelley Long.

    NBC, ABC

    Shelley Long.

Though she sailed through the 1980s with a series of feature film roles -- anyone for "Troop Beverly Hills"? "The Money Pit"? "Outrageous Fortune"? -- Long's post-"Cheers" career has been less storied. She showed up in "The Brady Bunch Movie" and its sequels as Carol Brady, and made several made-for-TV movies and had guest roles on TV shows. She currently recurs on "Modern Family" (as seen in the photo above right) and has two feature films slated for later this year: "The Wedding Chapel" and "A Matter of Time."

    Kelsey Grammer (Frasier Crane)

Woody Harrelson may have landed the most successful film career of the "Cheers" grads, but Grammer dominates on television: His "Frasier" spin-off ran another 11 years, meaning he played the character that began on "Cheers" for 20 years total. But he's also proved hilariously terrifying voicing "Simpsons" character Sideshow Bob, a role that helped bring his Emmy Award total to 5. He's generated headlines about his substance abuse, a sex tape and multiple marriages, yet has come out still successful -- though his two-season-old cable series "Boss" was recently canceled.

    George Wendt (Norm Peterson)

    George Wendt.

    NBC, Getty Images

    George Wendt.

Wendt has become "that guy," the actor who turns up every so often in a number of small, unexpected places -- earning shoutouts of the famous "Cheers" line, "Norm!" He popped up in Michael Jackson's "Black or White" video as an irritated father, appeared as himself on "Seinfeld" and "Family Guy," appeared on Broadway as Edna Turnblad in "Hairspray," played versions of Santa Claus several times (including on "A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!") and recently showed up on "Hot in Cleveland" as a character named Yoder -- his first two scenes, held in an Amish bar, featured everyone yelling "Yoder!" the moment he walked in. Norm lives!

    John Ratzenberger (Cliff Clavin)

It's long-established show lore that Ratzenberger read for the role of Norm, was turned down, and jumped on another idea: What about a bar know-it-all? And so Cliff was born. While Ratzenberger has kept up his guest roles on TV series and in films over the years, he's gotten the most prolific work of his career thanks to his ability to speak up -- his voice has appeared in every Pixar feature film. His website, packed with -- what else -- lots of factoids, reminds readers that he also had small roles in "The Empire Strikes Back" and two "Superman" films, and says that "makes him the 6th most successful actor of all time, as measured by a total box office of over $3,000,000,000." Know-it-all!

    Woody Harrelson (Woody Boyd)

    Woody Harrelson

    NBC, Getty Images

    Woody Harrelson

Who? Kidding: Harrelson is arguably the most well-known "Cheers" grad, having built a solid film career since what was essentially his first credited job on the series. He's been funny in films like "Zombieland" and scary in others like "Natural Born Killers," and is currently bringing his unusual presence to the "Hunger Games" films as drunken but canny Games winner Haymitch Abernathy.

    Kirstie Alley (Rebecca Howe)

The outspoken Alley spent her post-"Cheers" years slowly becoming more of a celebrity/personality than a regular actor. She did have her own series, "Veronica's Closet," for three years but has more recently become known for her struggles with weight (outlined in her "Fat Actress" pseudo-reality series). She appeared on "Dancing With the Stars" in 2011, and will have a new sitcom on TV Land later this year, "Kirstie's New Show," in which she'll star as a Broadway actress tracked down by the son she gave up for adoption. Bonus: She'll reunite on the series with fellow "Cheers" vet Rhea Perlman (who played Carla).

Official: Va. driver likely had medical condition

DAMASCUS, Va. (AP) ? Authorities believe the driver who plowed into dozens of hikers marching in a Virginia mountain town parade suffered from a medical condition and did not cause the crash intentionally, an emergency official said Sunday.

Officials did not have a formal confirmation or any specifics on the condition, but based on the accounts of authorities and witnesses on the scene, they are confident the issue was medical, according to Pokey Harris, Washington County's director of emergency management. "There is no reason to believe this was intentional," she said.

In what witnesses called a frantic scene at the parade, about 50 to 60 people suffered injuries ranging from critical to superficial Saturday. No fatalities were reported. Three of the worst injured were flown by helicopter to area hospitals.

Two people were kept at hospitals overnight, but their injuries were not critical as of Sunday, Harris said. "For the most part, everyone was treated and released," she said.

The crash happened around 2:10 p.m. Saturday during the Hikers Parade at the Trail Days festival, an annual celebration of the Appalachian Trail in Damascus, near the Tennessee state line about a half-hour drive east of Bristol.

Damascus Police Chief Bill Nunley didn't release the driver's name or age but said he was participating in the parade and he had traversed the Appalachian Trail in the past. Several witnesses described him as an elderly man.

Nunley said the man's 1997 Cadillac was one of the last vehicles in the parade and the driver might have suffered an unspecified medical problem when his car accelerated to about 25 mph and struck the crowd on a two-lane bridge along the town's main road. The driver was among those taken to hospitals.

"It is under investigation, and charges may be placed," Nunley said Saturday.

On Sunday, festival events were continuing as scheduled, Harris said. Mayor Jack McCrady had encouraged people to attend the final day.

"In 27 years of this, we've never had anything of this magnitude, and is it our job to make sure it doesn't happen again," he said.

Harris said that the incident left a "sad heart and black cloud" over the event and that people were proceeding with "heightened awareness." But she emphasized the crash was an accident and said no additional security measures were taken.

On Saturday, Rudolph "Chip" Cenci, 64, of Minoa, N.Y., told The News-Item newspaper in Shamokin, Pa., that he heard people yelling "get out of the way" and turned around to find the car was about to hit him. He jumped onto the hood and held onto the gap at the base of the windshield near the wipers. He said the driver had a blank stare on his face.

"I bet you that man never realized someone was on his hood," Cenci said.

Cenci said he had a bump on his knee but was otherwise OK. He added that his wife, Susan, 63, narrowly missed being hit.

Amanda Puckett, who was watching the parade with her children, ran to the car, where she and others lifted the car off those pinned underneath.

"Everybody just threw our hands up on the car and we just lifted the car up," she said.

Keith Neumann, a hiker from South Carolina, said he was part of the group that scrambled around the car. They pushed the car backward to free a woman trapped underneath and lifted it off the ground to make sure no one else was trapped.

"There's no single heroes," he said. "We're talking about a group effort of everybody jumping in."

Andrus collects five hits; Rangers top Tigers

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 12:10 a.m. ET May 19, 2013

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Anibal Sanchez was knocked out of the game early Saturday night, the second time in three games a Tigers starter hasn't made it out of the third against the Rangers.

Elvis Andrus had a career-high five hits, Mitch Moreland homered and Texas roughed up Sanchez in the Rangers' 7-2 victory over the Tigers.

Sanchez (4-4) gave up a season-high six runs in 2 2-3 innings, his shortest start in almost two years. The right-hander yielded nine hits, walked two and struck out two as his ERA jumped from 2.05 to 2.77.

Andrus ended Sanchez's night after 74 pitches with an RBI single that gave Texas a 6-2 lead.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander gave up eight runs in 2 2-3 innings in Detroit's 10-4 loss to the Rangers on Thursday night.

"Sometimes you just don't have it and you're trying to do the best you could," Detroit catcher Alex Avila said. "When guys have been as consistent as (Sanchez) has or like Justin has, everybody gets really worried. But I'm pretty confident he'll have a pretty good start his next time around."

Detroit has lost seven of 11 games and dropped a game behind the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central.

Torii Hunter snapped an 0-for-15 slide with an RBI double and he scored two batters later on Prince Fielder's single, bringing the Tigers within 4-2 in the third.

Sanchez was gone soon after that.

Moreland led off the bottom of the third with his 10th homer and Andrus' run-scoring hit made it 6-2 and forced Sanchez out of the game.

Sanchez threw 32 pitches in each of the first two innings. This was his shortest start since going 1 2-3 innings Aug. 10, 2011 as a member of the Marlins.

"It's a bad outing," Sanchez said. "I don't have an excuse. We have to give credit to the team, they swung well."

Andrus scored three runs, had two RBIs and stole a pair of bases as he hit leadoff for the second straight game in place of ailing second baseman Ian Kinsler. Andrus was a home run shy of the cycle and finished off his 5-for-5 game with a single to right in the eighth.

The Texas shortstop admitted that he was swinging for a homer in his last at-bat against reliever Phil Coke.

"(Adrian) Beltre told me to take three hard swings," Andrus said. "Try to go yard. That's what I did, but the pitch was down. But I'm really happy with a base hit."

Texas starter Justin Grimm (3-3) gave up two runs in 6 2-3 innings to snap a three-game losing streak. The rookie allowed seven hits and struck out two while throwing a career-high 105 pitches.

After allowing two runs in the third, Grimm retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced and left to a standing ovation. He credited a pep talk from manager Ron Washington after the third inning for his success Saturday.

"Wash got me in the dugout and told me to trust my stuff," Grimm said. "He kind of tapped me in the face and caught me off guard. Just hearing that he had confidence in me meant a lot."

Andrus singled on Sanchez's first pitch of the game, then stole second and advanced to third on Avila's throwing error. The Texas shortstop scored on Avila's passed ball.

The Rangers extended their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second.

Andrus got the inning going with an RBI triple that tipped the end of Hunter's glove in right. Hunter said that he lost the ball in the lights.

"I went to where I thought it was going to be and it wasn't there," Hunter said. "You can't catch something you can't see."

Andrus scored on Sanchez's throwing error and Lance Berkman capped the second inning with an RBI single.

Berkman's RBI double scored Andrus, who led off the sixth with a double.

NOTES: Texas RHP Colby Lewis (elbow) and C A.J. Pierzynski (strained right oblique muscle) will begin rehab assignments Monday for Double-A Frisco. Lewis was removed from his rehab stint earlier in the week with triceps tendinitis, but he threw on the field Saturday with no problems. . Detroit manager Jim Leyland said he expects OF Austin Jackson (strained right hamstring) to return from the disabled list when he is eligible May 27. . Kinsler missed his second straight game with bruised ribs, an injury that was aggravated after he was hit by a pitch from Verlander on Thursday night.

There is a link between use of anabolic-androgenic steroids and reduced mental health later in life. This is the main conclusion of a new study on elite male strength athletes that researchers from the University of Gothenburg recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Twenty per cent of the subjects in the study admitted steroid use.

The study is published by CERA, which is the University of Gothenburg's centre for education and research on addiction. Together with colleagues from Sahlgrenska University Hospital, they found a connection between abuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) and mental health problems many years later.

The study included almost 700 former Swedish wrestlers, weightlifters, powerlifters and throwers who competed at the elite level sometime between 1960 and 1979. Twenty per cent of them admitted using steroids during their active careers. The purpose of the study was to look for links between AAS use and mental problems.

'We found a clear link. AAS users were more likely to have been treated for depression, concentration problems and aggressive behaviour,' says Claudia Fahlke, director at CERA.

The researchers also found that AAS users were more likely to have abused other illicit drugs and alcohol. However, it remains unclear whether the steroid use actually caused the mental health problems or the mental health problems rather caused the steroid use.

'What we were able to show, though, is that psychiatric symptoms and use of steroids and other drugs tend to reinforce each other in a vicious cycle. This suggests that the anti-doping efforts remain very important, both in and outside of sports,' says Fahlke.
