Twitter changes business of celebrity endorsements (AP)

NEW YORK ? Rapper Snoop Dogg gave props on Twitter to an ad for the Toyota Sienna minivan. Actress Tori Spelling linked to a website for rental cars. And reality TV star Khloe Kardashian soliloquized about the brand of jeans that accentuates the famous Kardashian derriere.

"Want to know how Old Navy makes your butt look scary good? Ask a Kardashian," the reality TV star wrote, or tweeted, on the social media website. Of course, she capped off the reflection with a smiley face.

These celebs aren't just writing about family cars and fashion choices for the heck of it. Stars can get paid big bucks ? sometimes $10,000 or more per post ? to pontificate about clothes, cars and movies in the 140 characters or less allowed per tweet. That adds up to about $71 per character.

Twitter, which in its five-year existence has reshaped how people shop, vote and start revolutions, is now changing the business of celebrity endorsements. Just as Match.com and eHarmony pair up singles for dates, a growing number of startup firms are hooking up companies with stars who get paid to praise products to their thousands ? sometimes millions ? of Twitter followers.

The list of celebs and the things they hawk is long and getting longer all the time. The endorsements range from subtle to blatant; the celeb pairings from sensible to downright odd.

Singer Ray J urged his 600,000-plus Twitter followers to see the horror movie "Saw 3D." Football star Terrell Owens gave a shout-out in front of his more than 1 million followers to a hotel chain giving away sports tickets: "Comfort Inn is hooking up 3 days of it!" Lamar Odom, the L.A. Lakers forward, tweeted to his nearly 2 million followers about hip-hop artist and entrepreneur Jay-Z's book "Decoded": "My man Jay-Z ... only rapper to rewrite history without a pen. Until now."

Of course, anything on Twitter is short-lived and reaches only a small, self-selecting audience: Research firm eMarketer estimates that only 11 percent of U.S. adult Internet users are on the micro-blogging site. And even though some celebs have faithful groups of followers, it can be hard to measure whether their tweets lead people to spend.

Still, celeb tweets can be a way to grab an audience at a time when many people skip TV commercials using their digital video recorders. And paying a celeb to tweet is much cheaper than a traditional advertising campaign. Want a tweet from Khloe Kardashian? That will cost about $8,000, according to prices listed by social media marketer Izea. Looking for a cheaper option? Ray J is about $2,300.

Companies like Izea, Ad.ly and twtMob usually pair products with celebs through a combination of software algorithms and Hollywood instinct. The companies say they use many metrics to gauge the effectiveness of a paid tweet, such as the number of times it gets reposted by others.

When Ad.ly got Charlie Sheen to tweet for Interships.com in March, the actor was in the midst of getting fired from his sitcom "Two and a Half Men" over accusations of hard partying and drug use. Within an hour of Sheen's first post, Internships.com got more than 95,000 clicks.

"I'm looking to hire a (hash)winning INTERN with (hash)TigerBlood," tweeted Sheen, who had just recently signed up for Twitter and now has more than 5 million followers.

Dan Smith, vice president of marketing for the website CampusLIVE, which helps advertisers connect with college students, hired Izea to help him get a celebrity to tweet about his company. Izea gave him a short list, which included names like "Jersey Shore" reality TV star JWOWW, comedian Michael Ian Black and rapper Bow Wow.

Smith polled his interns and they picked Lindsay Lohan, the actress most famous for her run-ins with the law. According to Smith, CampusLIVE paid Lohan about $3,500 for one tweet: "These challenges for college kids on (hash)CampusLIVE are SO addicting!"

The post to Lohan's 2.6 million fans drove about 4,500 clicks to the website, Smith said. But he also said he wasn't sure if he'd use her again ? not because of her troubles, but because he's already tapped her fan base. His interns wanted to know if comedian Will Ferrell is available. Said Smith: "That would be a cool one to get."

For the record, Ferrell isn't on Twitter, says his spokesman, Matt Labov, who adds that the Twitter handles sporting his name are "imposters."

For her part, Lohan on her own time tweets about topics like fulfilling her community service sentence. But she has also posted comments for Izea on a few occasions, the company says. Her tweets about wind energy ("While saving the world ... save money! I love it!") and about a gold mining company ("R ur savings safe? Think again!") were paid endorsements, according to Izea's website.

Those posts, along with the CampusLIVE tweet, included the characters "(hash)ad" at the end, which indicates that a post is a paid endorsement. But Lohan's publicist, Steve Honig, says that Lohan does not "sell" her tweets: "She uses Twitter to communicate with her fans and let them know what she's up to."

Like any endorsement, celeb tweets come with the risk that a star's behavior will not coincide with the company's image. And of course, there's a science to picking the right one: Will consumers buy that their favorite rapper drives a minivan?

Twitter generally allows the paid tweets, as long as they're posted manually and not automated by a computer program. The Federal Trade Commission suggests endorsers end their tweets with the (hash) symbol, called a hash tag, and the letters "ad" or "spon," short for "sponsored by," to clarify that they're ads.

"The more transparent you are with your audience on Twitter, the more powerful that connection is," said Rachael Horwitz, a company spokeswoman.

Ed Aranda, a 27-year-old graphic designer and copy writer in Erie, Pa., doesn't like celebs mining their fans' trust to sell a product. Still, he thinks those reading the tweets should take responsibility.

"If you can't tell snake oil when it's being sold to you," Aranda said, "then you probably deserve what you're buying."

WWE's Most Unlikely Alliances

John Cena & The Rock aren?t the first rivals to unite against a common enemy. In anticipation of the debut of the most charismatic tag team of all time at Survivor Series, WWE.com looks back at some of the most unexpected alliances in WWE history.

666219123001|03:39Rock 'N' Sock Connection
The Rock may not be overly excited about teaming up with the leader of the ?Fruit Loop Troop? at Survivor Series, but he was even less enthused about joining forces with the bizarre Mankind in 1999. An unabashed admirer of The Great One, Mankind spent nearly a year trying to convince The People?s Champion to tag with him before The Rock finally relented. Forced to find a partner after constant attacks from The Unholy Alliance of The Undertaker and Big Show, The Brahma Bull called on the bizarre Superstar to watch his back. Surprisingly, the odd couple clicked and went on to win the World Tag Team Championship on three occasions.

666214128001|02:41John Cena & Shawn Michaels
Like The Rock, John Cena is no stranger to holding the tag titles with a guy he would dread sitting next to on a cross-country flight. Barreling toward an incendiary WrestleMania 23 WWE Title Match with HBK in 2007, the Cenation leader unexpectedly found himself teaming with his opponent when Mr. McMahon orchestrated a Raw tag bout between the adversaries and World Tag Team Champions Randy Orton & Edge. With no choice but to work together or be destroyed, Cena & HBK beat Rated-RKO to win the titles. The duo still carried these championships when they met in the main event of The Show of Shows, but their partnership crumbled the following night on Raw when a bitter HBK intentionally cost himself and Cena the titles.

666215843001|02:58Team WWE
At Survivor Series in 2001, The Great One once again found himself in tandem with Superstars he did not like, but had to trust. Defending WWE against the invading WCW/ECW Alliance, The Rock linked up with The Undertaker, Kane, Big Show and Chris Jericho to fight off "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Rob Van Dam, Kurt Angle, Booker T, and Shane McMahon. Proving that shaky coalitions rarely last, Team WWE nearly failed when a bitter Jericho waffled The People?s Champion during the bout, but The Brahma Bull persevered to win the important match thanks to some help from Angle, who was only pretending to be in cahoots with The Alliance.

680293471001|03:15?Stone Cold? Steve Austin & Mr. McMahon
Perhaps no rivalry in WWE history was as personal as the one that raged between beer swilling antihero ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin and megalomaniacal billionaire Mr. McMahon in the late '90s. Still, the world?s most insubordinate employee was able to put aside his loathing for the power-hungry honcho when WWE was threatened by the sinister Undertaker and his vicious Ministry in 1999. Looking to convert Stephanie McMahon to the dark side, The Demon from Death Valley nearly forced Mr. McMahon?s daughter into marrying him before The Texas Rattlesnake stopped the twisted ceremony. Saving The Chairman?s child united Austin and McMahon for a moment - at least, until Mr. McMahon revealed himself to be the ?Higher Power? pulling the strings of The Deadman?s demonic faction. Go figure.

Authorities: Car strikes 3 at Occupy DC protest

(AP) ? District of Columbia authorities say a car drove through a crowd near an Occupy DC protest and struck three people.

D.C. fire department spokesman Lon Walls said Saturday morning that the three were transported to two area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. He said none was in critical condition but that some injuries were "fairly serious."

Lt. Kelvin Cusick of the D.C. police department said early Saturday that the driver was cited and released. He said he did not know yet what the driver was cited for, or whether he'd been given a blood alcohol test.

"It's being investigated as an accident at this time," he said of the collision, which occurred at about 10 p.m.

The names of the parties were not immediately available.

Hundreds of protesters affiliated with Occupy DC shut down streets Friday near the city's convention center in downtown Washington, where a conservative group was holding a gathering.

Fox 5 reported that the vehicle struck two people, kept driving, and then struck a third person. Cusick said he could not confirm this account because the full police report hadn't been filed.

Police said the accident victims were all conscious.

One protester, 29-year-old Jesse Folks of Riverdale, Md., told The Washington Post that he was standing in the street with other demonstrators near the convention center when the car "just gassed it into a bunch of people."

"We were in the street, but this guy didn't even give us a chance to get out of the way," Folks said.

Inmates freed after crack penalties are eased (AP)

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. ? Antwain Black was facing a few more years in Leavenworth for dealing crack. But on Tuesday, he returned home to Illinois, a free man.

Black, 36, was among the first of potentially thousands of inmates who are being released early from federal prison because of an easing of the harsh penalties for crack that were enacted in the 1980s, when the drug was a terrifying new phenomenon in America's cities.

"I did more than enough time," Black said outside his family's Springfield, Ill., home, where family and friends had gathered to celebrate over dinner. "I feel like I can win this time. I'm a better man today than I was then."

The 1980s-era federal laws punished crack-related crimes much more severely than those involving powdered cocaine ? a practice criticized as racially discriminatory because most of those convicted of crack offenses were black.

More recently, the penalties for crack were reduced to bring them more in line with those for powder, and Tuesday was the first day inmates locked up under the old rules could get out early.

Some 12,000 prisoners are expected to benefit from reduced sentences over the next several years, with an estimated 1,900 eligible for immediate release as of Tuesday. On average, inmates will get three years shaved off their sentences. The reductions do not apply to people found guilty of crack offenses under state laws.

Black said like many of his peers, he started smoking crack in high school and began selling it partly to support his habit. He said he was a low-level dealer and that he didn't realize the mandatory minimum sentence he faced when he pleaded guilty in 2003 and was given a 15-year prison term.

With changes in the law, good behavior and credit for time served in jail, he was freed from the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., after 8 1/2 years locked up for the crime. His projected release had been Oct. 3, 2013.

"I didn't think it was fair and I still don't think it's fair now," Black said. "I know guys who aren't coming home, still, because of these laws that were placed upon a certain race of people," he said.

Kentucky inmate Darryl Flood, 48, thought he would have to wait until 2013 to get out of prison, more than a decade after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute crack. But on Monday a judge approved his release two years ahead of schedule.

Susan Cardwell, his sister in Haymarket, Va., said she was expecting him to arrive on a bus on Wednesday. She said she cried after getting a call from his lawyer with the news.

"He wants to get out, get a job and get his life back together," she said in a telephone interview. "He says he'll work two jobs if he has to."

Under the old system, a person convicted of crack possession got the same mandatory prison term as someone with 100 times the amount of powdered cocaine. Five grams of crack, about the weight of five packets of Sweet N'Low, brought a mandatory five years; it took 500 grams of powder to get the same sentence.

The law was seen as racially unfair because blacks made up the majority of people convicted of crack crimes, while whites were more likely to be found guilty of offenses involving powdered cocaine.

In 2010, Congress reduced the disparity in sentences for future cases. Last summer, the U.S. Sentencing Commission decided to apply the measure to inmates doing time under the old rules.

Chris Burke, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, said that he could not say exactly how many people would be let out Tuesday but that officials were working around the clock to process hundreds of orders from judges granting early release. In certain cases, prison officials have been given a grace period of several days to free inmates, Burke said.

The releases are the result of months of work by prosecutors, public defenders and judges across the country. Inmates' requests for sentence reductions were decided on a case-by-case basis, with courts taking into consideration such factors as the prisoner's behavior behind bars and threat to society.

In San Antonio, the federal public defender's office reported that it had about 15 to 20 inmates eligible for immediate release. In St. Louis, the office said it submitted 30 to 50 petitions asking for inmates to be set free right away.

In the eastern district of Virginia, which has the highest number of affected inmates anywhere in the country, public defender Michael Nachmanoff said that judges had ordered the immediate release of about 75 people.

Black, who earned a high school equivalency diploma and college credits behind bars, likes to cook and hopes to open a restaurant.

"It's a blessing just to see them smile, for me to be home" he said, referring to the friends and family who welcomed him home. "It lets me know I am loved. It's been a long ride, too. It's been a while. They held fast for me. I've got a lot of people counting on me so I've got to fly right this time."

Transocean claims indemnity under BP contract (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? Transocean Limited, the company that owned the drilling rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico last year, is arguing that its contract with BP shields it from having to pay for the largest offshore spill in the nation's history.

In court documents filed Tuesday, Transocean Ltd. claims a contract it signed with BP PLC., to drill the well indemnifies Transocean from paying fines or for damages.

A trial designed to assign shares of fault to the companies is scheduled to start Feb. 27. The trial also will aim to determine whether rig owner Transocean can limit what it pays claimants under maritime law.

Transocean says BP broke its contractual promises by suing Transocean.

BP did not immediately comment on the allegations.
