Fox Plans a Pair of Independence Day Sequels

The movie industry has spent nearly every summer for the last 15 years trying to unite the people behind watching their world get systematically blown up real good, hoping that each time they set New York on fire or smash the White House that it will evoke the same strange mix of visceral, nihilistic thrill and patriotic pride as 1996?s Independence Day. Many of those attempts have been led by director Roland Emmerich himself, so it?s no surprise to hear that he?s finally given up on finding new, not-so-subtle angles to recreate Independence Day and just started pushing to make some sequels already. Fox has similarly been working on the project since 2009, planning to shoot back-to-back the two follow-ups, which will tell one big story. One big, loud story.

However, the deal remains stymied by Will Smith?s exorbitant, $50 million asking price to come and punch more aliens in the face, along with his other, more recent demands such as strict control over the script (as seen in the recent stagnation on Men In Black III), and finding parts in the movie for wife Jada and daughter Willow. But today Vulture reports that the studio is expected to have the scripts in hand for ID2 and ID3 by December, and that it?s considering moving forward without Smith if necessary?though obviously that means less Will Smith bucks, as his face on a movie poster still causes overseas moviegoers to involuntarily begin spewing euros from their lederhosen. And of course, it would be unthinkable on our end, as we?ve all just agreed to pretend that this project requires integrity and continuity of character. After all, no amount of pretty fireballs will distract us from wondering why that charismatic pilot isn?t here to welcome us, again, to Earth, and remind us that highly evolved alien races are no match for America?s street smarts.

Wall Street protesters hold vigils for injured vet (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? Anti-Wall Street demonstrators held vigils for an Iraq War veteran seriously injured during a protest clash with police in California as some Occupy encampments came under growing pressure from authorities to abandon sites in parks and plazas.

A crowd of at least 1,000 people, many holding candles, gathered Thursday night in Oakland in honor of 24-year-old Scott Olsen, who is hospitalized with a fractured skull.

In Nashville, police cracked down overnight on an Occupy protest camp near the Capitol under a new policy setting a curfew for the complex. They moved in a little after 3 a.m. and arrested about 30, who were later released after a judge wouldn't sign the warrants. About 20 protesters who stayed on a nearby sidewalk were not arrested and were still there later in the morning as state troopers stood guard at the steps to the Capitol.

Protesters also held a vigil for Olsen in Las Vegas, which drew a handful of police officers. Afterward, protesters invited them back for a potluck dinner.

"We renewed our vow of nonviolence," organizer Sebring Frehner said.

The Marine veteran, who won medals in Iraq, has become a rallying cry for the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators across the nation, with Twitter users and protest websites declaring, "We are all Scott Olsen."

Joshua Shepherd, 27, a Navy veteran who was standing nearby when Olsen got struck, called it a cruel irony that Olsen is fighting an injury in the country that he fought to protect.

Despite the financial underpinnings of the protests, Olsen himself wasn't taking part out of economic need.

His friends say he makes a good living as a network engineer and has a nice apartment overlooking San Francisco Bay. Still, he felt so strongly about economic inequality in the United States that he fought for overseas that he slept at a protest camp after work.

"He felt you shouldn't wait until something is affecting you to get out and do something about it," said friend and roommate Keith Shannon, who served with Olsen in Iraq.

It was that feeling that drew him to Oakland on Tuesday night, when the clashes broke out and Olsen's skull was fractured. Fellow veterans said Olsen was struck in the head by a projectile fired by police, although the exact object and who might have been responsible for the injury have not been definitively established. Officials are investigating exactly where the projectile came from.

Even as the vigil was held in Oakland, protest organizers prepared to defy Oakland's prohibition on overnight camping at a plaza near City Hall.

Shake Anderson, an organizer with Occupy Oakland, said half a dozen tents were erected on the plaza Thursday evening where police armed with tear gas and bean bag rounds disbanded a 15-day-old encampment Tuesday. More tents, food and supplies arrived during the meeting and vigil for Scott Olsen, with about 25 tents erected late Thursday.

"We believe in what we're doing," Anderson said. "No one is afraid. If anything, we're going to show there's strength in numbers."

Few police were seen in the area during late Thursday night, though Oakland Mayor Jean Quan issued a statement asking protesters not to camp at the plaza.

Elsewhere across the United States, protesters brushed off pressure from authorities and maintained the camps that have sprung up in opposition to growing economic inequality.

Protesters at San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza braced for a police raid early Thursday that never came. Still, police have warned the protesters that they could be arrested on a variety of sanitation or illegal camping violations.

Officials told protesters in Providence, R.I., that they were violating multiple city laws by camping overnight at a park.

Anti-Wall Street protesters camped out in downtown Los Angeles said they're planning to continue their demonstration indefinitely, although both they and the mayor's office were eyeing alternate sites.

Meanwhile, Olsen has been improving. Doctors transferred him from the emergency room to an intensive care unit and upgrading his condition to fair.

Dr. Alden Harken, chief surgeon at Alameda County Medical Center, said Olsen was still unable to speak but had improved dramatically since he was hospitalized unconscious with a fractured skull and bruised brain that caused seizures.

By Thursday afternoon, Harken said, Olsen was interacting with his parents, who flew in from Wisconsin in the morning, doing math equations and otherwise showing signs of "high-level cognitive functioning." The doctor said he may require surgery, but that's unlikely.

"He's got a relatively small area of injury and he's got his youth going for him. So both of those are very favorable," Harken said.

Olsen smiled when Mayor Jean Quan stopped by to visit and expressed surprise at all the attention his injury has generated, hospital spokesman Vintage Foster said. The mayor apologized and promised an investigation, according to Foster.

His uncle in Wisconsin told The Associated Press that Olsen's mother was trying to understand what had happened.

"This is obviously a heartbreaker to her," George Nygaard said. "I don't think she understands why he was doing this."

The group Iraq Veterans Against the War blamed police for Olsen's injury. Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said officials will investigate whether officers used excessive force. He did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.

Police have said they responded with tear gas and bean bag rounds only when protesters began throwing bottles and other items at them.

On Tuesday night, Olsen had planned to be at the San Francisco protest, but he changed course after his veterans' group decided to support protesters in Oakland after police cleared an encampment outside City Hall.

"I think it was a last-minute thing," Shannon said.

A video posted on YouTube showed Olsen being carried by other protesters through the tear gas, his face bloodied. People shout at him: "What's your name? What's your name?" Olsen just stares back.

People at OPSWAT, the San Francisco security software company where Olsen works, were devastated after learning of his injuries. They described him as a humble, quiet man.

Olsen had been helping to develop security applications for U.S. defense agencies, building on expertise gained while on active duty in Iraq, said Jeff Garon, the company's director of marketing.

Olsen was awarded seven medals while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, which he left as a lance corporal in November 2009 after serving for four years. One of them was the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Olsen moved to the Bay Area in July, and quickly found friends in the veterans against the war group.

His tours of duty in Iraq made him more serious, Shannon said.

"He wasn't active in politics before he went in the military, but he became active once he was out ... the experience in the military definitely shaped him," Shannon said.

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your Life [Evil Week]

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your LifeYou see them everywhere you go on the internet: anonymous users with nothing to say but rude, off-topic, or annoying comments aimed at making you angry. The only cure is to just stop caring, and while that's easier said than done, these tips should help you overcome their spell.

The word "trolling" actually comes from a fishing technique in which one casts out bait to catch fish?and that's exactly what internet trolls do. They use rude statements and other techniques to try to "lure" you into getting angry or responding. Their only goal is to get you angry?just like your sibling used to do when they'd poke you or repeat everything you said. Often, they latch onto powerful individuals, in order to feel more powerful themselves.

Trolling on the internet started on Usenet newsgroups back in the day, but now you see them everywhere?internet forums, blogs, YouTube, and even Twitter. The problem is now that in today's day and age, all of us are subject to trolling?not just those powerful enough to have their own blogs. This means that ignoring them becomes a lot more difficult, since you're far more emotionally invested in the things you do and say, and the trolls have that many more mediums to attack you. Here are a few key things that will help build up your thick skin and help you stop caring about what pesky bridge-dwellers are saying on the internet. Photo remixed from an original by Peter Bernik .

Don't Feed the Trolls

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your LifeYou've probably heard this phrase numerous times before. It's the cardinal rule of being in an internet community, and with good reason. Avoidance is and has always been the best course of action, hands down. The majority of trolls thrive on the confrontation?after all, they're singular goal is to get attention?so the more you ignore them, the better. Downvote their comments or block them if you're on a forum that supports such features, and move on. It's incredibly tempting, but try to ignore them the best you can. Don't respond to them, not even to call them out as a troll, and they'll go away. Even a simple comment like "please stop" or "go away, troll" can bring attention to their comments (either by lengthening the thread or, in some forums, actually causing that thread to move higher in the chain). If a troll returns to their computer with zero replies, however, or if their comment just floats to the bottom of the thread, they'll go looking somewhere else for the attention they crave. Showing them that you can be baited, even a little bit, is just asking for more. Image by xkcd.

They're Attacking Boredom, Not You

One of the easiest ways to spot a troll is their completely lack of reason. Trolls will lash out and be purposely offensive to draw you in, rather than actually saying something of value. In their statements, you'll see a very "I'm right and everyone else here is wrong" attitude. Chris Shiflett over at Swiss Miss put it best:

The lesson I've learned is to be wary of those who [take pride in disliking things]. The ones who seem to think that being critical is the same as having good taste. Those people almost never have good taste, so their opinions don't matter.

So, even if what you've done isn't so great, just remember that those who can't say so with grace, those who seem to take pride in criticizing you, their opinions don't matter. It may very well be that you've created a masterpiece, and they're just children.

He says it doesn't take any sophistication to be a graceless critic, and he's dead on?if there isn't anything of value in their statement, then you shouldn't be putting any weight on it. Don't let the haters affect you; they're hating because they're bored, not because you've necessarily done anything poorly.

They're Not Worth the Energy

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your LifeIn the end, do you really need to waste your energy worrying about what one or two sad, bored people are saying about you? No. Blogger Scott Stratten explains the concept of "emotional currency" and how it relates to dealing with trolls:

In a nutshell, you only have so much emotion to go around. It should be spent on people who value it, who value you, not some douchenozzle that just finished a 36-hour bender on World of Warcraft and is pissed his wizard lost an epic battle on the island of Corinthian. There are way too many incredible people in this world, and Twitter especially that are worth your time.

Just because the internet has a lot of psychos doesn't mean it isn't full of awesome people, and time spent arguing with trolls is time that could have been spent having meaningful discussions with others. Furthermore, he says, time spent worrying about what trolls thing is time you could have spent on the people that actually matter. Do you really want to drain your energy on something that isn't worthwhile?

Learn to Laugh at the Situation

A positive attitude can get you through anything, and while you can keep yourself from responding to a troll, it's nearly impossible to ignore them altogether?even if you take steps to de-troll your internet. The best defense for keeping your sanity intact is to just have a sense of humor about it. It may seem insensitive to say "just grow a thicker skin", but like it or not, it's very effective. Susannah Breslin, contributor over at Forbes, once said if you "get hit over the head enough times, your head goes numb". It's absolutely true. Just remember that if you're getting trolled more often, it's probably because they see you in a position of power, which means you're doing something right.

How to Respond When You Get Locked In

While I highly recommend avoiding the trolls at all costs, if you accidentally get yourself lured into a discussion, you can either try avoiding, or attempt to fizzle out the argument yourself. We've talked about using "cognitive therapy" once before: if you kill them with kindness, you'll thwart their plans much easier. Software developer Shlomi Fish explains, using the example of a troll that bashes specific programming languages in a forum thread:

It's very simple:

  1. Ask him what he means. ; interrogate him:
    • "Why do you feel that Python is so bad? What do you find wrong with it?"
  2. Agree with him (but use a softer language):
    • "Yes, Perl is a nice language, and I agree that Python has its downsides and/or trade-offs in comparison to Perl."
    • "It's OK to prefer Perl, we'll still accept you here."

This will make the troll lose steam and help you find a common ground.

Some may disagree with this method?I personally think it's better to just ignore and move on?but if you do get caught responding and can't just turn back, you can change your tune and try to kill them with kindness. It could be a way out.

Learn to Separate Constructive Criticism from Trolling

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that, as I've said before, there are some cases in which someone may be rude or put you down, but they're just tactless. If you can extract any constructive criticism or valid arguments out of someone?even if it means sending them an automated response telling them to be nicer?it can be worth your while. Being mean isn't the same as being a troll, and sometimes it's okay to give someone the benefit of the doubt before ignoring them altogether.

It takes a bit of practice and conditioning, but the main goal is to just stop giving a crap about what other people think?especially those that have nothing useful to offer. Got any of your own tips for dealing with trolls, either on the internet or in real life? Sound off in the comments.

Jonah Hill takes on TV cartoon "Allen Gregory" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Ay Carumba! Bart Simpson better watch out because there's a new kid on Fox competing for attention of TV fans on Sunday nights.

"Allen Gregory," brought to life by "Superbad" actor Jonah Hill, debuts on Fox this Sunday telling of a pretentious boy named Allen Gregory, who struggles to adapt to public school after his family loses all its money.

Despite the topical themes of financial hardship underlying the show's plot, Hill declined to link "Allen Gregory" to the current, gloomy economic times troubling people.

"It's a really funny cartoon show," Hill told reporters in a recent conference call, adding that the family were "a bunch of spoiled rich people figuring out how to make their way in the world for the first time."

He called 7-year-old Allen Gregory "a fish out of water" who was "just trying to fit in."

The bespectacled Gregory, sharply dressed in suits despite his tender age of seven, will embark on a steep learning curve throughout the series, finding it hard to connect to his classmates and even becoming somewhat attracted to his much older female school principal.

"We don't shy away from anything on the show," said the "Moneyball" actor. "It's all reality based. That being said, I've never heard of a seven year-old boy having a relationship with a 70-something-year-old, disgusting woman."

The 27-year-old actor, who rose to fame with slapstick comedies like "Superbad" and "Knocked Up," is stepping behind the scenes to produce "Allen Gregory" along with co-creators, Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul.

Hill said he was inspired by ribald animated series like "The Critic," "South Park" and "The Simpsons," which has long been among the top TV cartoons featuring the trick-playing youngster Bart Simpson.

With a cast of comedy pros including "Saturday Night Live" funnyman Will Forte and Hill's frequent co-star Leslie Mann, Hill has his own wish list of potential guest stars.

"Robert De Niro would be the best "Allen Gregory" guest star," laughed Hill.

"Allen Gregory" will air in primetime on Fox's Sunday night "Animation Domination" lineup alongside "The Simpsons," "Family Guy" and "American Dad."

Boys Should Get HPV Vaccine Too, CDC Says

News | Health

The rationale behind the recommendation is that the vaccine prevents genital warts and anal cancers in males, both of which can be caused by HPV

HPV ON PAP SMEAR: Image of normal squamous cells (left) and HPV-infected cells (right). Image: Wikimedia Commons

A vaccine originally intended to prevent cervical cancer in girls should be given to boys as well, an advisory panel for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today (Oct. 25).

The panel voted to recommend the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine be given to boys ages 11 to 12. The vaccine is already recommended for girls of this age.

The rationale behind the recommendation is that the vaccine prevents genital warts and anal cancers in males, both of which can be caused by HPV. The vaccine may also prevent head and neck cancer, which has been on the rise in recent years.

In addition, vaccinating boys may help reduce cervical cancer in women. If males do not acquire the infection, they cannot pass it to females.

The new recommendation "will be a hugely important step in cancer prevention in this country, both for girls and for boys; women as well as men," said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University, in an interview before the vote. Because rates of HPV vaccination in girls have been low, it's important to vaccinate boys as part of the public health strategy to prevent cervical cancer, Schaffner said.

Although the vaccine has been licensed by the Food and Drug Administration for boys ages 9 to 26, only about 1 percent of males in this age group have received it, said Dr. Paul Offit, chief of the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. After this new recommendation, that percentage should increase dramatically, Offit said.

Boys and men ages 13 to 21 who have not been vaccinated, or haven't received all their shots should also be vaccinated, the committee said.

Benefit for boys and girls

Two of the most common strains of HPV (HPV 16 and 18) cause about 21,000 cancers per year in the United States. One-third of these cancers are in males, according to the CDC.

There are now studies showing the vaccine is effective at preventing genital warts and anal cancers caused by HPV. The recommendation is for the Gardasil vaccine, made by Merck & Co. Inc, which protects against four strains of HPV. The other available HPV vaccine, called Cervarix and made by GlaxoSmithKline, is not licensed for use in males.

And although the vaccine has not been proven to prevent head and neck cancers, which can also be caused by HPV, the recent rise in cases of these cancers likely factored into the panel's reasoning for the recommendation, Schaffner said. Between 1988 and 2004, there was a 28 percent increase in oropharyngeal cancer, a type of head and neck cancer, said Dr. Lauri Markowitz, a member of the CDC committee on HPV vaccines.

In addition, it wasn't previously clear whether vaccinating boys as a means to prevent cervical cancer in girls would be worth the cost. If every girl was vaccinated, the benefit of vaccinating boys would be minimal, and come at a high price, researchers reasoned.

However, new research shows only about 32 percent of U.S. girls receive all three shots of the HPV vaccine (three shots are thought to be optimal for HPV prevention). This low rate of vaccination rate in girls means "it becomes much more sensible to vaccinate the boys also," Schaffner said.

Schaffner also pointed out that the new recommendation will protect men who have sex with men ? a group that may not be protected from even a high rate of vaccinations among girls and women.

Neil McCarthy: Big Bob

My Dad died last week.

He loved martinis, women named Joan, a breaking news story, and books. In 1975, he had to give up the martinis, because, as it turned out, he loved them too much. Then, he loved God.

Which, I have discovered, can be just as intoxicating.

He was an over-the-top guy and made sure you knew it. He was not cool. He was hot. And like most non-cool, hot, over-the-top guys in this "too school for cool" era of phony understatement, he was teased for it.

Relentlessly.

Too bad.

We could use a little hot today. From a president, who is way too cool. And from a culture, which has turned cool into a synonym for smart.

Which it decidedly is not.

He had a high school education and about a year of college. He was what the old timers call a "newspaperman." Not a "journalist" or "broadcaster" or "personality" or, God forbid, "talking head." He worked for the Daily News, one of New York City's two remaining tabloid newspapers, for twelve years, from 1950 to 1962. And then for WNBC-TV in New York and NBC News for the next twenty-five.

He loved the news business. And it loved him back. He was the first newspaperman in NYC to report that Mafia kingpin Frank Costello had been killed. In the "if it bleeds, it leads" tabloids, this was a big deal. Most of us remember "Houston, we have a problem" because Tom Hanks said it in the movie Apollo 13. Daddy actually heard it late one night over the Mission Control radio as he covered that space shot from the Johnson Space Center outside Houston.

He never won a Pulitzer. In fact, he probably gave one up. He crossed a police line at a murder scene in the '50s one day because, as a beefy Irish guy, everyone at that time thought he was a cop. When the real cops kicked him out, he grabbed the wrong trench coat. It belonged to one of the Chiefs at the NYPD's Division of Internal Affairs. In the pocket was a list of all the corrupt cops the NYPD was then investigating.

He gave the list back.

So long Pulitzer.

He was also over the top in his imperfections. Because he loved those martinis for too long, he missed Cub Scouts, Little League, most of his first marriage (to my mom), and a good chunk of his paycheck.

But he conquered that demon as well.

And then was passionate about the conquest.

To a defrocked, alcoholic priest who he sponsored to recovery in "the program," as all the AA guys and gals affectionately call it, he was that guy's Jesus.

Which, all teasing aside, is pretty amazing when you consider the source.

In my teens, long before Tim Russert wrote any books, he was "Big Bob." Not because he was all that big. He just couldn't be missed. He wouldn't let you.

Thank God.

Because...

Now he is.

Think tank retracts study on marijuana clinics

A nonprofit think tank on Monday retracted a widely reported study that linked last year's closing of hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles to a rise in crime rates in surrounding neighborhoods.

Santa Monica-based Rand Corp. said in a statement that questions raised after the study was released last month prompted an unusual internal review.

Researchers relied on a commercial crime mapping service, believing it included information from various jurisdictions, including the Los Angeles Police Department. However, that agency did not give data to the service.

"That review determined the crime data used in the analysis are insufficient to answer the questions targeted by the study," the statement said.

The study looked at crime reports for neighborhoods surrounding 600 dispensaries in the 10 days before and 10 days after Los Angeles officials shuttered the pot clinics last summer after a new ordinance went into effect. The analysis showed crime increased about 60 percent within three blocks of a closed dispensary compared with those that remained open.

The report found that the further away from the clinics the less crime there was.

The Los Angeles city attorney's office called the study deeply flawed and demanded the retraction. Rand pulled the study from its website earlier this month.

"The city attorney's office believes that retracting the study was the right thing for Rand to do and we are pleased they were receptive to our concerns regarding the study's flaws," said city attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan. "The public interest and public safety is always better served when we use accurate and credible information."

Rand researchers plan to conduct a new analysis when they have adequate data.

Freescale joins ARM A5 and M4 cores at the hip for performance and power savings

Freescale CPUYou may have noticed a trend recently -- pairing slightly less powerful cores that sip power, with more robust ones that can chug through demanding applications. NVIDIA's Tegra 3 will be packing an underclocked fifth core, while ARM's big.LITTLE initiative matches a highly efficient 28nm A7 with the beefy A15. Now Freescale is planning to use the same trick, but you won't find its asymmetrical CPUs in your next tablet or smartphone. Its platform, which marries a Cortex M4 to a Cortex A5, isn't meant to compete with the latest Snapdragon. These chips will find homes in factories and in-dash infotainment systems which have increasingly sophisticated UIs, but don't need to push thousands of polygons. Software development tools will land before this quarter is out and the first batch of silicon will be announced in Q1 of 2012. Looks like the era of "dual-core" meaning two identical cores has officially come to an end.
