The explosion of video conferencing in the communications industry has led to a number of surprising developments in institutions and businesses all around the world. The technology is being used to help users adapt to unique situations, avoid the expenses and the stress associated with travel, and cut down on their carbon footprints. It has been applied to many more environments than just the conference room, too ? we?ve now seen video conferencing and telepresence setups in hospitals, prisons, court rooms, classrooms, museums, and more. It expedites many processes that traditionally have experienced slow movement due to paperwork, travel, and other bureaucratic roadblocks. But now, video conferencing seems to be finding a home in almost every institution that you can think of. One point of interest is its use in the worlds of business and academia as a tool for remote interviewing.
Finding the right person for the job
Remote interviewing has been a topic of controversy in recent years due to its straying from conventional face-to-face meetings that some would argue hold an invaluable meaning. However, the reality of today?s world is that these types of interviews are not always practical or even possible. In a recent article published by DNA India, reporter Kanchan Srivastava looks at how video interviews have taken off in Mumbai and other areas of the world. In discussing the story of a 22-year old student interviewing for a potential position at a company, he writes:
?The company had only one vacant post and it saved time, energy and money of the employers as they could not afford to waste time to come down to?Mumbai?to hire only one person. Virtual interviews are common in IT industry but campuses have started equipping themselves only recently when the world started witnessing second phase of slowdown.?
The ability of companies to use remote interviewing as a replacement for travel makes things easier for both the interviewer and the applicant. Although the applicant may be apprehensive about the use of video conferencing technology at first, the interviews are conducted in largely the same manner as they would be in person.
Complications in VC interviews
The article makes a point of noting that the use of Skype can complicate the process because of its lower-grade quality and the potential to have no video connectivity. It is preferred that interviews can be performed with stable video and audio connections.
Remote parties will also need to collaborate on choosing the same software to interact with each other. As the article noted, while many companies (especially those specializing in IT) will have powerful video conferencing systems in place, individuals and even many campuses may not have the same hardware and software.
Other Applications
Interviews are necessary for a wide range of positions and institutions. It stands to reason that interviews for acceptance into esteemed schools or programs could also be performed remotely. As many businesses and other groups are looking for individuals with specific and well-tailored skills, it is important that they be able to reach out to a large geographical region in order to find the right person for the position.
