Hurricanes, Holidays And You

Try to imagine this scenario happening to you: you've booked your flight, packed your bags and finally arrived at your destination for a much needed 'winter sun' vacation. You've checked into your resort, gotten acclimated, and now you're ready to head to the beach for some rest and relaxation. Just then you receive news that a hurricane is headed directly to the location you're staying at.

It depends on where you are from; maybe you're used to weather related phenomenon like tornadoes or earthquakes, and if so, you likely understand the often sudden onset of disaster and the unpredictable nature of a weather related disaster. Hurricanes, fortunately, are different in that they are predictable and can be tracked, whichs allows for those who may potentially be in their path a luxury that most other violent weather systems don't afford - time.

Now, the logical assumption here would be that if hurricanes are predictable in their paths and provide plenty of early warnings, then they can be avoided, and they should never be an issue on your holiday because of the advanced warning you'd have. Well, not exactly. Most vacations, tropical in nature or otherwise, are more often than not booked months in advance; something which makes avoiding a hurricane a bit more difficult.

So, you're on your vacation and you've been informed that here is a hurricane warning for your area - what now? First things first - don't panic. The next thing you should do (*if you are able to) is to check what the local city or government information sources suggest; many locations have contingency plans in place, with specific information available to those who may be subjected to inclement weather. Preparation suggestions, plans of action, specific scenarios, and other vital information is readily available and will help you get a handle on what to expect, and what you can expect to do.

While you may not be in immediate danger when you receive the news of an approaching hurricane, understand that time is now of the essence. The clock is ticking and your time to prepare or evacuate is finite. Talk to the staff or manager at your location as they may have additional information or procedures you may need to know about. They may have travel routes for you to take by car, or they may be able to make arrangements to get you to the local airport. Making arrangements for re-scheduling, re-locating or for inquiring about a refund can be done when there is sufficient time to do so. These things should not become your focus at this time and the accommodations staff and management won't have time to deal with these issues on a one on one basis, so don't trouble them, and instead remain considerate of the situation they're dealing with (as well as the other guests) When you are in imminent danger is not the time to become selfish. If you are asked to leave, you should do as asked. Attempting to stick around and wait out the storm will likely mean you'll be in a local shelter and adding to the already full capacity.

If there is absolutely no way for you to leave your location, then, and only then, should you consider using facilities and resources meant for the local population. If you are able to leave, remember that many local businesses will be shutting down and you likely won't have time to take care of any last minute things such as eating. Depending on the severity of the incoming hurricane, resources will likely need to be conserved for the local population, so skip anything that isn't essential (*if you're leaving by car, then of course you will require fuel, but most other things can be forsaken). Get packed, don't waste time, and get going.

Above all, remember that the likelihood of a hurricane striking during your vacation is very low, even if you're traveling to a location with a history of them. Statistically, you have every chance of planning and taking your vacation without one striking, even during the peak season of an area prone to them. A bit of advanced planning and an understanding of what you'll need to do, will allow you to plan a vacation, that will leave you prepared should things get windy.
