Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Through Jan. 27

New York

?Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop,? at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is assistant curator Mia Fineman?s response to a persistent question she has been asked over the past five years: Have digital technology and software programs that alter an image with a few clicks on a comkeyboard destroyed faith in the evidentiary truth of photography?

Her persuasive answer: not nearly as much as we?ve been led to believe. Supported by an astute selection of some 200 works that goes back to the painted daguerreotype and forward to darkroom alchemy from the early 1990s, she argues that photographers have been ?lying? to us since the medium?s invention, often with our encouragement.

?Faking It? surveys the techniques of perfidy?retouched or hand-colored prints, masked or ?sandwich? negatives, double exposures, reversed tones, photo-collage, lenticular distortion, air-brushing?developed by professionals and amateurs since the 1840s to accent or complicate factual realities recorded by the camera. The dual nature of photography as objective reporter and fantastic apparition offers unique dramatic options. The camera?s push-button realism makes it easier to tell convincing half-truths and outright fibs. Totalitarian governments have buttressed their own legitimacy by adding or subtracting figures in newspaper photographs, while the public in capitalist democracies has given photographers broad license to alter reality, provided their images were clearly designed as art or entertainment.

Ms. Fineman has a roomy definition of manipulated photographs. The show contains Pictorialist masterworks, such as Edward Steichen?s tinted platinum print of a moonrise in the gloaming; the anti-Fascist cut-ups of John Heartfield; Soviet, Nazi and Chinese propaganda; surrealist fashion portraits by Erwin Blumenfeld and Richard Avedon; conceptual comedy by John Baldessari and William Wegman; as well as Weegee?s political caricatures and an array of ?Tall-Tale? postcards, an American specialty that dates back to the 1910s.

[SB10001424052970204425904578075091160075364]

Many of these works have appeared in other books and shows, but not in a context so deliberately meant to breach well-guarded categorical preserves such as ?documentary.? The 19th-century landscape artists Gustave Le Gray and Carleton Watkins, for example, are seldom grouped with Henry Peach Robinson and Oscar Gustave Rejlander, best known for moralistic Victorian tableaus.

Ms. Fineman wonders in her essay if there is any such thing ?as an absolutely unmanipulated photograph,? and views all these men as stretchers of the truth. Robinson and Rejlander photographed costumed tableaus, while Le Gray and Watkins inserted cumulus clouds (from separate negatives) into pictures of seas or mountains. As she notes, such trumpery was not necessarily an aid to pump up the melodrama. It?s just that film at the time was insensitive to fast-moving skies. The doctored print was, in a way, a more accurate picture of the atmospheric conditions that the camera had recorded when Le Gray and Watkins had stood outdoors.

That the 19th-century public did not mind such trickery and greeted photography as a kind of stage magic can be seen in the many double-exposures here of severed heads and figures floating inside bubbles. The fraudulence of William H. Mumler, whose photographs claimed to record ?spirits? of deceased loved ones until his deceit was exposed in 1869 at a New York trial, was less common than overt forms of prevarication. The ?jackalope? and other silly graphic incongruities appeared on American postcards a decade or so before Paris intellectuals thought that pictures joining an umbrella and an ironing board constituted an art movement.

Even if people can?t decipher how an ?impossible? image is done, they can applaud stagecraft. Ms. Fineman presents for the first time prints of the two negatives that the German photographer Harry Shunk pieced together to produce ?Leap into the Void,? the iconic image from 1960 of the French artist Yves Klein swan-diving from a second-story window into the street. Other highlights that one can smile at (but need not know the mechanics of) are Grete Stern?s post-World War II ?Dream No. 1: Electrical Appliances for the Home,? in which a huge male hand reaches down to ?turn on? a lamp shaped like a curvaceous woman, a collage as funny as it is sexist; and William Mortensen?s ?Obsession,? a potent mixture of Hollywood stardom, gothic horror and 1930s kitsch.

Ms. Fineman is perhaps not as careful as she should be to separate photographs taken as personal descriptions of things or events and those constructed as illustrations for a narrative. She claims that ?straight? photography was ?always more of a rhetorical ideal than a practical reality.? As an example, her essay cites Ansel Adams?s ?Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico? from 1941, later prints of which he enhanced in the darkroom. By the standards of truth that govern photojournalism, which were never his standards, these prints were ?lies.?

But she dodges some thornier questions. Is the veracity of any image always compromised by the technology that produces it? Shouldn?t Adams receive some extra credit for capturing the scene in situ rather than by stitching the elements together with multiple negatives? Or is his artful (and sometimes excessive) use of filters as dissembling as software that lets anyone drop a full moon into any scene? If all photographs can be said to be manipulated, what is the point of this show?

?Faking It? stops before the revolution in production and dissemination of images attendant with the Internet era. But if anything, the panoply of manipulated photographs on the walls here is a match for anything done by artists since Adobe Systems Inc.

(the convenient funder of the exhibition) released Photoshop in 1990.

Don?t believe me? Step across the hall to the Met?s companion show, ?After Photoshop: Manipulated Photography in the Digital Age.? Continuity is more apparent here than historical rupture. Techniques of picture editing on a computer are more sophisticated, but the results are not.

Take the two photographs by Kelli Connell. Her 2006 digital twinning of herself in situations that suggest an erotic (or narcissistic) relationship differs hardly at all from Maurice Guibert?s c. 1890 double portrait of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec as both artist and model. Nancy Burson?s antinuclear ?Warhead I,? a computer-generated work from 1982 that anticipates what could be done in Photoshop, merges the faces of Leonid Brezhnev, Ronald Reagan, Fran?ois Mitterrand, Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Thatcher into a single head. But it is merely an updated version of Francis Galton?s composite portraits of genetic undesirables from the 1870s.

Historians of photography are continually astonished to learn in the writing and archives of the 19th century how rapidly the new technology was understood, absorbed and exploited, whether for politics, science, commerce or art. A mischievous chronicle of visual trickery over a century-and-a-half, ?Faking It? reveals the potential inherent in a communication process as transformative in its day as computers have been in ours.

Off to the future with a new soccer robot

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Computer scientists from the University of Bonn have developed a new robot whose source code and design plan is publicly accessible. It is intended to facilitate the entry into research on humanoids, in particular, the TeenSize Class of the RoboCup. The scientists recently introduced the new robot at the IROS Conference (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) in Portugal.

With its white head and black body, "NimbRo-OP" looks almost human. After all, at a height of 95 centimeters, it is almost the size of a small child. Among soccer robots, it counts as a "grown-up." Thanks to light-weight materials, its weight of 6.6 kilograms is, however, clearly less than that of a child. It has a total of 20 drive elements that convert computer commands into mechanical motions. This is also why "NimbRo-OP" is very agile -- it has no problems kicking a soccer ball, and it can also get up from a prone position like a human, for soccer players also sometimes fall down.

The robot's source code and design are open source

"We have made very effort to keep the design simple to allow other working groups to also use this robot as a basis for their work, modify and repair it," says Prof. Dr. Sven Behnke, lead of the Autonomous Intelli?gent Systems working group from the University of Bonn. Source code and design plan of "NimbRo-OP" are open source. This is intended to facilitate entry into research on humanoids, in particular, the TeenSize Class of the RoboCup.

The Bonn researchers used different humanoid robots as the inspiration for their project. "There are also other very interesting robots; but they are clearly smaller than ours," says Prof. Behnke. "But its size is essential for being able to do certain things, such as in robo-soccer." In addition, "NimbRo-OP" has a special wide-angle camera to get a view of the soccer field, and high processing capacity for swift response.

"NimbRo-OP" to participate in RoboCup

This robot, which was recently presented at the IROS Conference (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) in Portugal, is a prototype. "NimbRo-OP is not suitable for consumers," says Prof. Behnke. "Our target group consists of scientists who want to program robots based on this hard- and software." The scientists from the Uni?versity of Bonn also want to enter their robot in the RoboCup.

This is a first step in the development project. "With this platform, we would like to achieve compatibility with other robots," says the computer scientist. Over the next three years, the development project will be continued together with igus GmbH K?ln, an application partner, within a knowledge transfer project entitled "A humanoid TeenSize open-platform soccer robot." Prof. Behnke explains, "The goal of the project is accelerating progress in the humanoid robot area by intensifying the sharing with other groups of researchers."

Robots' soccer skills still inferior to those of humans

Chess computers have already proven that they can best human capabilities. "But humans are still clearly better at soccer than robots," the computer scientist from the University of Bonn reports. The requirements for soccer robots are high; they have to perceive environ?mental conditions via cameras and inclination sensors, detect the goal posts, opponents and obstacles, and make and implement decisions in?volving their team members. "There is still much to do to solve all the problems out on the pitch," adds Prof. Behnke.

Robo-soccer as a testing grounds for future everyday applications

The scientists are using the RoboCup to experiment with complex challenges for bipedal robots that can potentially be used in many practically relevant environments beyond soccer. "For example, they are capable of using tools, climbing stairs, and passing bottlenecks that are too narrow for wheeled or tracked robots," explains Prof. Behnke. In addition, they can also use human facial expressions, gestures and body language for communicating.

He adds, "Our goal is to stop re-inventing the wheel over and over; by using an open platform together with other researchers, we want to find solutions while saving on effort and expenses." The working group around Prof. Behnke is the most successful humanoid team worldwide at the RoboCup, and with wins in eleven individual competitions, quite likely even the most successful RoboCup team overall.

2012 Chevrolet COPO Camaro Convertible is an Inferno Orange ...

Inferno Orange COPO Camaro Convertible is a Rare Rag Top

Final 2012 production model to be auctioned for the American Heart Association and previews 2013 COPO Camaro program

LAS VEGAS ? The last 2012 COPO Camaro debuted today at the SEMA Show, in Las Vegas, and it's headed to the auction block. Chevrolet will sell the Inferno Orange Metallic convertible race car at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, in January, to benefit the American Heart Association.

A few factors should make this supercharged drop-top more enticing to bidders:

It's one of 69 COPO Camaro race cars built by Chevrolet for 2012 ? and it's car number 69 of the sequenced production matched to its engine
It's one of only two convertibles built ? the other being car number 68 (which has been set aside by Chevrolet and isn't planned for public sale)
It's one of 20 cars built with the 327 engine and 4.0L supercharger
It's the only '12 COPO Camaro painted Inferno Orange Metallic ? and features additional custom graphics and special interior trim
It's the only example built with a Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission.
The top is fully operational, although it must be up when racing, per NHRA rules.

"The COPO Camaro program has been a special program and there's not a better way to close out the 2012 racing season than with the final ? and most unique ? one of the production run," said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "Chevrolet is proud to once again partner with the American Heart Association at Barrett-Jackson for the sale of this COPO Camaro convertible. It will make a great race car or collector vehicle for a lucky bidder, who will be buying a piece of history.

"I am also happy to announce that due to strong customer demand we will produce another run of 69 COPO Camaros for 2013. More than 3,000 hand-raisers expressed interest in buying a COPO after we introduced the car at SEMA last year. We are excited to support these grassroots motorsports enthusiasts in their Stock Eliminator and Super Stock drag racing efforts," said Campbell.

The last 2012 COPO Camaro is powered by the COPO 327 engine that features a 4.0L Whipple supercharger, for an NHRA-certified output of 550 horsepower. The 2012 COPO Camaros were also available with a supercharged 327 engine featuring a smaller, 2.9-liter supercharger and a naturally aspirated 427 engine. All of the engines were assembled at GM's unique Performance Build Center, in Wixom, Mich., where the LS7 and LS9 production engines for the Corvette Z06 and Corvette ZR1, respectively, are built, along with select Chevrolet Performance crate engines.

All COPO Camaro were built by hand starting with hardware from the Oshawa assembly plant that manufactures regular-production Camaros, including the same "body in white" body shells racers can purchase from Chevrolet Performance to build their own dedicated race car. Each was fitted with an NHRA-approved roll cage and other safety equipment, along with racing chassis and suspension components ? including a unique solid rear axle system in place of a regular-production Camaro's independent rear axle. The cars rolled off the line wearing lightweight Bogart racing wheels and Hoosier racing tires.

Although only 69 production models were built for 2012, many of the fundamental components used to create the cars ? including all of the hand-assembled racing engines ? are available from Chevrolet Performance and the licensed aftermarket manufacturers who supplied them. They are listed in a special COPO section of the new 2013 Chevrolet Performance catalog, which debuted at the SEMA Show and is now available from Chevrolet dealers or by ordering online at chevroletperformance.com.

Also available from Chevrolet Performance is a "build book," which provides an overview of the cars' assembly process.

"Not everyone could purchase a COPO Camaro production model in 2012, but we are making it easier to build one from the ground up," said Campbell. "From the body in white to the COPO crate engines, we offer the parts and a build book to replicate these quick race cars in your garage."

Racing enthusiasts who are interested in more information on the COPO program ? including registering their interest in one of the 2013 COPO Camaros ?can go to www.chevroletperformance.com to sign up for COPO Camaro updates through the Fuel online newsletter. They can also follow the latest COPO information at theblock.com ? the online automotive community powered by Chevrolet Performance.

COPO Camaros by the numbers

With the final 2012 COPO Camaro produced, Chevrolet has tallied the production numbers for the special run. Of the 69 vehicles produced:

67 were coupes and two were convertibles
43 cars were equipped with the 427 naturally aspirated engine ? including the original proof of concept show car that debuted at the 2011 SEMA Show
20 cars were equipped with the 327 / 4.0L-supercharged engine
6 cars were equipped with the 327 / 2.9L-supercharged engine
8 customers ordered the collector's package, which included all three engines number-matched to their car
32 cars were painted Summit White ? including the original show car
20 cars were painted Black
12 cars were painted Victory Red
2 cars were painted Ashen Grey Metallic
2 cars were painted Silver Ice Metallic
1 car was painted Inferno Orange Metallic
12 cars were ordered without COPO graphics.
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, and high quality. Mammograms: For 1 life saved, 3 women overtreated

LONDON (AP) ? Breast cancer screening for women over 50 saves lives, an independent panel in Britain has concluded, confirming findings in U.S. and other studies.

But that screening comes with a cost: The review found that for every life saved, roughly three other women were overdiagnosed, meaning they were unnecessarily treated for a cancer that would never have threatened their lives.

The expert panel was commissioned by Cancer Research U.K. and Britain's department of health and analyzed evidence from 11 trials in Canada, Sweden, the U.K. and the U.S.

In Britain, mammograms are usually offered to women aged 50 to 70 every three years as part of the state-funded breast cancer screening program.

Scientists said the British program saves about 1,300 women every year from dying of breast cancer while about 4,000 women are overdiagnosed. By that term, experts mean women treated for cancers that grow too slowly to ever put their lives at risk. This is different from another screening problem: false alarms, which occur when suspicious mammograms lead to biopsies and follow-up tests to rule out cancers that were not present. The study did not look at the false alarm rate.

"It's clear that screening saves lives," said Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research U.K. "But some cancers will be treated that would never have caused any harm and unfortunately, we can't yet tell which cancers are harmful and which are not."

Each year, more than 300,000 women aged 50 to 52 are offered a mammogram through the British program. During the next 20 years of screening every three years, 1 percent of them will get unnecessary treatment such as chemotherapy, surgery or radiation for a breast cancer that wouldn't ever be dangerous. The review was published online Tuesday in the Lancet journal.

Some critics said the review was a step in the right direction.

"Cancer charities and public health authorities have been misleading women for the past two decades by giving too rosy a picture of the benefits," said Karsten Jorgensen, a researcher at the Nordic Cochrane Centre in Copenhagen who has previously published papers on overdiagnosis.

"It's important they have at least acknowledged screening causes substantial harms," he said, adding that countries should now re-evaluate their own breast cancer programs.

In the U.S., a government-appointed task force of experts recommends women at average risk of cancer get mammograms every two years starting at age 50. But the American Cancer Society and other groups advise women to get annual mammograms starting at age 40.

In recent years, the British breast screening program has been slammed for focusing on the benefits of mammograms and downplaying the risks.

Maggie Wilcox, a breast cancer survivor and member of the expert panel, said the current information on mammograms given to British women was inadequate.

"I went into (screening) blindly without knowing about the possibility of overdiagnosis," said Wilcox, 70, who had a mastectomy several years ago. "I just thought, 'it's good for you, so you do it.'"

Knowing what she knows now about the problem of overtreatment, Wilcox says she still would have chosen to get screened. "But I would have wanted to know enough to make an informed choice for myself."

Yes, your gas mileage may vary. It's ok.

Fuel economy depends on a slew of factors beyond the make and model of your vehicle, including traffic, driving style, landscape, and even weather. For the real scoop on a car's fuel efficiency, check real world economy websites and see what other drivers have been getting.?

A message board flashes a warning to drivers on Interstate 10, the Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles, to plan for a closure of the Interstate 405 freeway in this September 2012 file photo. Living in a high-traffic area like Los Angeles may reduce your car's gas mileage, but things like landscape and weather can also play a role.

A look at MPG-recording sites like?Fuelly?or the EPA's own?fueleconomy.gov?website will show that many drivers have wildly varying economy figures.

And that, of course, is why the slogan "Your mileage may vary" came into being.

People have known this for as long as official tests have been carried out. Certainly since the old VW bug, if the advert you see above is to be believed.

Volkswagen has long since been renowned for its self-deprecating advertising style, often implying that its products might not be the best (particularly during the Beetle era), but selling their virtues with brilliant effect.

And while the Beetle might have achieved impressivefuel economy?figures in official testing, VW was more keen to promote the actual figures that real-world driving might result in--in this case, an "honest 25 mpg".

In completely non real-world driving, with a significantly lightened body--and even a jockey behind the wheel to reduce weight, at least for amusement purposes--the Beetle would be capable of up to 84 mpg.

In more recent years, Volkswagen has been on the other side of gas mileage claims. Many drivers in the real world are finding their Volkswagen diesels will achieve?comfortably more than that seen in EPA testing--though no carmaker these days would put its neck on the line and suggest their cars beat official figures... and those that can't even match them are?at risk of getting sued.

Gas mileage depends on far more than just the type of?car?you drive. Regularly encounter lots of heavy, stop-and-go traffic? Expect to see less than even the official city figure (unless you drive a hybrid...). Drive 90 mph on the freeway? Don't expect to match that 40 mpg figure. Regularly do 80 miles a day in your Chevy Volt without a top-up charge in the middle? That combined economy figure will seem harder to hit.

Then there's weather, driving style, and landscape. One-way journeys can look pretty bad on your trip-computer if you've been going up-hill a lot (just as well you'll be on an easy downhill glide in the other direction...).

There's maintenance too--keep those tires pumped up and in good condition, and you'll have your best chance of getting good mileage. And accessory usage--keep aircon and lights to a minimum (safety permitting) and your wallet will benefit. Do the complete opposite, and don't expect to match those window stickers.

So while you're shopping for your next car, take a look around some of the real-world economy websites, and see what other drivers have been getting and on what sort of journeys.

Flood Insurance + Hurricane Sandy = A Sign? | Budgets Are Sexy

hurricane sandy nasa shot

So I don?t know if this is a sign or not, but we literally JUST got a notice in the mail asking if we wanted to renew our flood insurance for the year ;) Right as Hurricane Sandy is about to hit hard and wreak havoc all around us! Yikes. (For all you reading this right now on the East coast, I hope you?re doing okay and you?re nice and safe!)

And the funny thing here was that I was literally just telling the Mrs. last week that we should probably fore go it this round because odds are we won?t need it, haha? And then of course news of Hurricane Sandy hits and everyone starts freaking out. I didn?t go anywhere this weekend with someone mentioning how bad it?s going to be, or how much water/sand/batteries they still need to get to survive this once in a lifetime storm. And now because of everyone else I?m scared too! Haha? but as my wife puts it, better to be safe than stupid. So I guess it couldn?t hurt that we stocked up a little bit too.

But anyways, back to the flood insurance stuff. By a show of hands, how many of you think it?s worth it? And how many of you have actually *purchased* some? Unfortunately I can?t see your hands right now (or maybe I?m right behind you? Boogy boogy!) but with everything, it probably depends on your comfort levels and how much risk you?re willing to accept. And where you actually reside too ? though humans being what we are, there?s no telling what we could mess up and accidentally cause some flooding ourselves :( I?m just as scared as that as I am it all coming from the outside in! Haha? I ain?t no handyman, that?s for sure?

Last year we signed up to it because one of the major storms DID scare us into thinking a flood could happen at any time, even though the closest body of water was pretty far away. When it just pours and pours all day long around you, though, you can?t help but wonder if it?ll eventually rise up and force itself right into your home. And with me being gone so much with Love Drop (we were flying to a new state once or twice a month), the last thing I wanted to do was worry the Mrs. even more and have to clean up the mess if God forbid it came to that. So the extra protection w/ the flood insurance def. made us feel better ? knowing we can just call up USAA right away and get the process of resolving things started ASAP. It made a lot of sense last year.

hurricane sandy sandbagsBut here we are, 12 months later, and we?re right back to making the decision yet again. Do we shell out more money for another year and gain that peace of mind, or do we take the risk and bet on the odds the flood(s) will never come and save some hefty cash?

It?s a weird situation ?cuz on one? hand you DON?T want to use it if you buy it because it means something bad just happened, haha, but on the other hand you DO because you?ve been paying for it so long! :) I guess it?s kinda like car insurance in that regard, only that?s usually mandatory and more likely you *will* end up using at some point or another unfortunately.

Anyways, here was everything swirling in my mind before we made a decision:

  • This hurricane going around us right now is just nuts.
  • If this one doesn?t cause water damage, is it possible other ones will later this year?
  • Do we want to tap our Monster Savings if the $hit hits the fan and we didn?t sign up?
  • Or do we just pony up the measly $200 (in the grand scheme of things) and cover us a ton more?
  • How much is that peace of mind worth?
  • How annoying is it to reconsider this every single year?? (Haha?)

After some thorough chats and beers last night, the wife and I decided to just bite the bullet and pay the premium again so we can have one less thing to worry about going forward. Yes it sucks we?re out a cool $200 now, especially with all the other stuff we?ve needed to maintained around this house lately, but at the same time we?d be incredibly PISSED at ourselves if God forbid something happened and we had to activate it. I think the money lost greatly surpasses the fear of regret in this particular instance. Mainly because it would just be so incredibly expensive if a flood DID take over our entire basement! Or any other areas of the house for that matter.

So that?s what we did. We shelled out the money and locked it in once and for all as we brace for this crazy hurricane to hit. Making USAA either super brilliant with their timing of these notices being mailed, or the Big Man upstairs is trying to give us a sign to make sure and pay attention ;) Regardless though, we think it was the best move.

Here was the coverage we got:

  • Building coverage: $30,000
  • Contents coverage: $12,000
  • Deductible (for both building and contents each): $1,000
  • Amount this will cost us for one year: $191

Now we just pray this hurricane dies out before anything crazy happens! It will be pretty bad if we lose electricity considering my job depends on it, haha? Oh well? As long as we?re all safe and sound I?ll be one happy blogger :) Hope you guys stay out of trouble too! The fingers are a crossed.

Increased risk for breast cancer death among black women greatest ...

SAN DIEGO ? Non-Hispanic black women diagnosed with breast cancer, specifically those with estrogen receptor-positive tumors, are at a significantly increased risk for breast cancer death compared with non-Hispanic white women.

"This difference was greatest in the first three years after diagnosis," said Erica Warner, M.P.H., Sc.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass., who presented the data at the Fifth AACR Conference on The Science of Cancer Health Disparities, held here Oct. 27-30, 2012.

Prior research has shown that non-Hispanic black women have lower breast cancer survival rates relative to other racial/ethnic groups.

Warner and colleagues conducted a study of 19,480 women who presented to National Comprehensive Cancer Network centers with stage 1 to stage 3 breast cancer between January 2000 and December 2007. They compared breast cancer-specific mortality among 634 Asian women, 1,291 Hispanic women, 1,500 non-Hispanic black women and 16,055 non-Hispanic white women.

After a median follow-up of 6.9 years, the researchers found that non-Hispanic black women had a 48 percent higher risk for breast cancer death in the first three years after diagnosis compared with non-Hispanic white women. After three years, non-Hispanic black women had a 34 percent increased risk for breast cancer-specific mortality.

"The higher risk for early death among black women was more striking among women with estrogen receptor-positive tumors," Warner said.

Non-Hispanic black women with estrogen receptor-positive tumors were more than twice as likely to die from breast cancer within the first three years of diagnosis compared with non-Hispanic white women. This risk was also increased in non-Hispanic black women with luminal A and luminal B breast cancer subtypes.

"This finding is important because these are the types of tumors that we traditionally think of as more treatable," Warner said.

No difference in breast cancer mortality between non-Hispanic black and white women was found for estrogen receptor-negative, basal or HER2-overexpressing tumor subtypes.

Warner and colleagues also evaluated breast cancer survival among Asian and Hispanic women. Compared with non-Hispanic white women, data indicated that Asian women had a 40 percent lower risk for breast cancer death. The researchers observed this decreased risk in all breast cancers and in estrogen receptor-negative, luminal A and HER2-overexpressing tumors. They found no significant differences between non-Hispanic white women and Hispanic women for breast cancer mortality.

"The results of this study emphasize that clinical management and follow-up for patients with breast cancer, particularly black women, is important in the first few years after diagnosis," Warner said. "Although the difference between blacks and whites was highest for this time period, the risk for death was highest in the first few years after diagnosis for all groups."

Berlusconi threat to topple Monti shows party divisions

ROME (Reuters) - Former premier Silvio Berlusconi's threat to bring down Italy's government underscores deep divisions in his center-right party ahead of next year's elections and risks rattling markets which see Prime Minister Monti as Italy's saviour.

Berlusconi made the unexpected threat on Saturday, still fuming from his conviction 24 hours earlier on charges of tax fraud and a jail sentence of four years which he will not have to serve until all appeals are exhausted.

In a hastily called news conference he attacked the magistrates who convicted him as part of a caste of leftist "dictators" a vitriolic charge he has leveled many times before.

But then he trained his sights on Prime Minister Mario Monti's economic policies.

"We have to recognize the fact that the initiative of this government is a continuation of a spiral of recession for our economy. Together with my collaborators we will decide in the next few days whether it is better to immediately withdraw our confidence in this government or keep it, given the elections that are scheduled," he said.

Only three days earlier, when he announced he would not be a candidate for prime minister in next April's elections, Berlusconi said the Monti government had "done much" and was going "generally" in the right direction.

The Monti government of non-elected technocrats is supported by the center-left, the center-right and the center. It would lose its majority and have to resign if most of Berlusconi's PDL party withdrew support.

The possibility of a government collapse before elections scheduled for next April spooked financial and political commentators, who worried about market reaction.

"The damage would be enormous," Stefano Folli, editor of Italy's leading financial daily, Il Sole 24 Ore. "Damage in terms of political neurosis, international anxiety, threats to the stability law (the annual budget), and a general discrediting."

WORRIES ABOUT SPREAD

Monti has pushed through painful tax hikes, spending cuts and a pension overhaul to cut public debt which is running at 126 percent of gross domestic product, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Unemployment in Italy has risen to 10.7 percent, its highest level since monthly records began in 2004, and unions are locked in disputes with companies over plant closures and layoffs

Fabrizio Cicchitto, leader of Berlusconi's PDL party in the lower house of parliament, was cool to the idea of a government crisis, saying instead that the country had to avoid "an explosion" of the spread between German and Italian bonds.

On Friday, Italy's 10-year bonds were yielding 336 basis points more than debt of similar maturity issued by Germany, widely seen as Europe's safest. When Monti took over from Berlusconi in November, the spread was about 550, sending borrowing costs soaring to 7.6 percent.

"Italian political risk is rearing its ugly head again," said Nicholas Spiro, head of Spiro Sovereign Strategy in London.

"Berlusconi knows he can't return to frontline politics. So instead, he is opportunistically exploiting the chronic political instability in Italy and, more worryingly, the German-led crisis management policies in the eurozone in a bid to shore up the flagging support for his center-right party," he said.

In his long, rambling news conference on Saturday, Berlusconi, 76, attacked Monti for bowing to what he called Germany "hegemony" in European economic matters.

"These are critical weeks for the eurozone and Italy can ill afford further political uncertainty at a time when it's seeking to differentiate itself favourably from the troubles in Spain," Spiro said.

The fact that Cicchitto and other PDL leaders did not rush to second Berlusconi's suggestion of a government collapse spoke volumes about the rifts within the party, divided between hard-core Berlusconi supporters and moderates such as party secretary Angelino Alfano.

The divisions meant the PDL would likely not vote as a united bloc in a no-confidence vote.

"I don't think Berlusconi has the numbers to topple the Monti government but he does have the numbers to make life very difficult for the government," said Rosy Bindi, president of the center-left Democratic Party (PD).

Some commentators said that if the Monti government did collapse, elections might be held in February instead of April. Monti has not commented on Berlusconi's threat.

Berlusconi, whose "bunga bunga" parties with aspiring starlets won worldwide notoriety, has taken a largely backseat role in politics since he was forced to step down, but he remains the dominant figure within the PDL, of which he is president.

Some political commentators said that by threatening Monti, Berlusconi may be trying to patch up relations between the right wing of his party and the Northern League. The League, a former Berlusconi ally, does not support the Monti government.

An important indication of the strength of Italian parties will emerge on Monday, when counting begins on Sunday's vote in Sicily to elected a new regional government.

Berlusconi threatens to bring down Monti government

ROME (Reuters) - Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Saturday his centre-right bloc may withdraw its support from the government of Mario Monti, a move that could throw Italy into political chaos ahead of next April's national elections.

"We have to recognize the fact that the initiative of this government is a continuation of a spiral of recession for our economy," Berlusconi told a news conference in northern Italy a day after he was convicted and sentenced to four years for tax fraud related to his Mediaset media empire.

"Together with my collaborators we will decide in the next few days whether it is better to immediately withdraw our confidence in this government or keep it, given the elections that are scheduled," he said.

The Monti government of non-elected technocrats is supported by the centre-left, the centre-right and the centre. It would lose its majority and have to resign if the entire centre-right, including Berlusconi's PDL party, withdrew support.

Monti took office as prime minister last November when Italy's bond yields were soaring. He has pushed through tax hikes, spending cuts and a pension overhaul to cut public debt which is running at 126 percent of gross domestic product, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Unemployment in Italy has risen to 10.7 percent, its highest level since monthly records began in 2004, and unions are locked in disputes with companies over plant closures and layoffs.

Berlusconi, a 76-year-old billionaire media magnate, gave no precise timing for when the decision on whether to keep supporting Monti or not would be made.

An indication of the centre-right's strength will come on Sunday when Sicilians go to the polls to elect a new regional government.

ATTACKS GERMANY, MERKEL, SARKOZY

Berlusconi also condemned the Monti government for following what he called the "hegemonistic" economic policies of Germany and accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy of "trying to assassinate my international political credibility" when he was prime minister.

Berlusconi was convicted on Friday of inflating prices paid for television rights via offshore companies and skimming off money to create illegal slush funds.

The court imposed a five-year ban on running for political office but since the sentence does not come into effect until all appeals are exhausted, Berlusconi can run for parliament in the next national elections in April.

In an interview earlier on Saturday he had suggested that he might not leave front-line politics as expected, although he later confirmed that he would not be a candidate for prime minister. He did not rule out running for parliament.

The former prime minister, who was convicted three times during the 1990s in the first degree before being cleared by higher courts, has the right to appeal the ruling two more times before the sentence becomes definitive.

He has often accused magistrates of waging a political war against him.

"Ours is not a democracy but a dictatorship of the magistrature," he said, listing the amount of time and money he has had to spend to defend himself in trials he says are all based on unfounded accusations.

The court ruling said that between 2000 and 2003 there had been "a very significant amount of tax evasion" and "an incredible mechanism of fraud" in place around the buying and selling of broadcast rights by Mediaset.

Berlusconi, whose "bunga bunga" parties with aspiring starlets won worldwide notoriety, has taken a largely backseat role in politics since he was forced to step down, but he remains the dominant figure within the PDL.

His standing with the general public has fallen sharply after the array of sexual and political scandals and an opinion poll last month gave him just 18 percent support, well behind Angelino Alfano, the PDL's 42-year-old secretary.

Airlines ask fliers to reschedule due to hurricane

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. airlines are giving travelers a way out if they want to scrap their plans due to Hurricane Sandy.

All the major airlines are offering waivers to customers who wish to reschedule their flights without incurring the typical fee of up to $150. The offers cover passengers flying in or out of just about any airport from Latin America to New Hampshire. Most waivers for travel in the Northeast are only valid Monday through Wednesday.

The airlines have only canceled a handful of flights so far, nearly all of them in and out of Florida and the Caribbean.

Hurricane Sandy killed at least 20 people in the Caribbean, and left Bahamas this afternoon. It is expected to move north, just off the Eastern Seaboard.

Forecasters say it could blend with a winter storm to produce a so-called "Frankenstorm" along the U.S. East Coast next week. They say there will be hundreds of miles of steady, strong and damaging winds and rain for the entire Eastern region for several days. That could produce a bigger wallop than last year's damaging Irene, which caused the cancellation of nearly 14,000 flights in a four-day period.

Those hoping to fly in or out of affected areas are asked to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Airlines also promise to update their Facebook pages and Twitter feeds with the latest information. To cancel, passengers should call the airline directly. Some airlines also allow changes to be made on their websites.

The last major storm to threaten airline operations was Hurricane Isaac, which hit the Gulf Coast in late August. A few hundred flights were canceled.

Passengers can expect cancellations to increase as the storm moves north over the weekend.

"Airlines and other operators generally stop flying to airports in the potential storm path long before winds reach dangerous levels," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

On its current path, Sandy threatens major disruptions at airports around New York ? the nation's busiest airspace. United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue all have large operations in the New York area. US Airways has a hub in Philadelphia. Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines flies between some East Coast cities and the Caribbean.

In 2 murder cases, mothers turn in their own sons

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) ? Mindy Sigg sat sobbing on Thursday, listening to prosecutors tell a court that her 17-year-old son had confessed to the abduction and killing of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

While any mother would be devastated, there was an even more heartbreaking wrinkle for Sigg: She was the one who called police.

It was not the only high-profile case this week in which a mother made that painful choice. In New Jersey, Anita Saunders saw something on a Facebook page that led her to call police.

Her two sons, ages 15 and 17, are now charged with murdering 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale, a bike-lover who authorities said was lured to their home with the promise of new parts.

What does it feel like to turn in your child, knowing they could be sentenced to many years in prison? Surely, no one knows but those who've done it.

But a main motivation, according to one criminologist, is simply a desire to do the right thing.

"These are law-abiding people, pro-social people," said Kathleen Heide, professor of criminology at the University of South Florida. "And besides doing the right thing, the parents often want to get their children help."

What they often aren't aware of, though, are the full ramifications in terms of likely punishment.

"If these are cases of first- or second-degree murder, in most cases the kids will be charged as adults," Heide said. "This means they can be sentenced to life in prison."

In both cases, authorities are deciding whether to prosecute the suspects as adults.

Certainly not all parents are ready to turn in their kids. One high-profile case from the 1990s, in fact, resulted in strains between the United States and Israel, when a father helped his teenage son escape this country after a particularly brutal murder in Maryland. The son, Samuel Sheinbein, confessed and is now serving a 24-year sentence in Israel ? a lighter term than he likely would have gotten in the United States.

Mindy Sigg made a different decision. Reached by phone on Wednesday, she told The Associated Press: "I made the phone call, and he turned himself in. That's all I have to say." Then she broke down in tears.

Her son Austin Reed Sigg made his first court appearance Thursday in the death of Jessica and in a separate attack on a 22-year-old runner, who managed to break free, in May.

Prosecutors say he has confessed in both cases, and investigators have overwhelming DNA evidence against him. He was ordered held without bail; prosecutors are expected to formally charge him next week.

Sigg's father, Rob Sigg, issued a written statement Thursday commending his ex-wife's decision and asking for prayers and support for the Ridgeway family.

"This horrible event is a tragedy for both the families, as well as the community. I ask also for your prayers and support for Austin's mother, whose courageous act ? unimaginably painful for any parent ? has put this tragedy on the path to resolution," he said. "I am hopeful that as the legal process unfolds, the Ridgeway family may come to know peace."

Peg Claspell, who lives near the Siggs, said she was grateful to the mother for her decision and called it the "most loving, difficult thing."

"I can't imagine the pain for her, and she's in my prayers," Claspell said. "She has a long and difficult time ahead of her."

Claspell's husband, Tom, struggled when asked if he would turn in a child. "I can say yes, but I don't know if I would. It would be a very hard thing to do," he said, explaining it would depend on the severity of the crime.

In a case like this, "I probably would," he said.

In the New Jersey case, Justin Robinson, 15, and Dante Robinson, 17, have been charged with murder and other counts in the death of 12-year-old Autumn, whose body was found Monday stuffed in a recycling bin only blocks from her home in Clayton.

An autopsy found the seventh-grader suffered blunt force trauma consistent with strangulation.

The boys are due in court Friday for a hearing to determine if they will remain in custody.

What's rare about both cases, said Heide, the criminologist, is that boys of this age rarely kill girls, especially girls so young. "Usually boys this age kill other males, and in their own age cohort," she said.

Jessica disappeared three weeks ago after leaving her home in the Denver suburb of Westminster to walk to school. She never arrived. Her remains were found on Oct. 10. Sigg was taken into custody late Tuesday after police received the mother's phone call. He lived about a mile from Jessica.

Sigg wore a blue-green jail uniform and had a light goatee when he appeared in a heavily guarded courtroom in Golden.

Four of his family members were seated in the court, and they sobbed at times during the hearing.

When District Judge Ann Gail Meinster asked Sigg if a parent was present, he said "Yes" and looked toward his relatives. He then mostly sat with his head bowed.

Seven of Jessica's family members sat in the courtroom with their arms around each other. Sigg glanced in their direction just once.

Public defender Ryan Loewer had argued for setting bail for Sigg, saying he has no prior criminal history. Prosecutor Hal Sargent said Sigg had confessed and investigators had a strong case.

"There's DNA evidence, and the evidence is overwhelming," he said.

After the hearing, Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey said prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty for Sigg because he is a minor.

Storey said the law is unclear on whether Sigg could be sentenced to life in prison.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that the death penalty was unconstitutional for minors. Colorado law allows for life sentences for juveniles convicted of serious crimes, but it would be up to a judge to determine whether that's appropriate, Storey said.

Storey declined to discuss the possibility that Sigg might enter an insanity plea.

Former high school classmates painted a picture of Sigg as an intelligent teen who often wore black and complained about school but who would stay late sometimes to work on computers. Sigg was interested in mortuary science and was taking forensics classes, said Rachel Bradley, 17, who attended Standley Lake High School with him.

Sigg enrolled in August at Arapahoe Community College, which offers the state's only accredited mortuary science program. He didn't have enough credits yet to apply to that program.

Sigg had left Standley Lake High in July after finishing the 11th grade and later earned a GED. School officials don't know why he left.

Former schoolmate Sarah Morevec said Sigg had been bullied for having a high voice.

Germany orders recall of some Novartis flu shots

BERLIN (AP) ? German authorities ordered a recall Thursday of some batches of Novartis flu vaccine as a precautionary measure, after the company reported the appearance of small particles in the manufacturing process.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute, which is part of the country's Ministry of Health, said there had been no reports of particle formation in Germany or of any serious side effects during the current flu season.

"However, in the interest of risk prevention and consumer safety it is necessary to cancel the approval for certain vaccines, since the formation of particles in the vaccine and therefore the risk of serious side effects cannot be ruled out," the institute's president Prof. Klaus Cichutek said in a statement.

The decision affects four batches of the influenza vaccine Begripal and one batch of Fluad.

Italy's health ministry banned the sale of four Novartis flu drugs on Wednesday. These included Fluad and Begripal ? sold as Aggripal in Italy ? as well as two others: Influpozzi Adiuvato and Influpozzi Subunita.

Switzerland's regulator Swissmedic also suspended deliveries of flu vaccines from Novartis as a preventive measure against possible contamination.

Britain's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said there was currently no evidence to pull the vaccines off the market, but that it was gathering further information on the Novartis products.

The Swiss pharmaceutical company said Thursday it was cooperating with the Ministry of Health in Italy, where the vaccines are produced, and was committed to providing vaccines to patients for the upcoming flu season.

"Novartis confirms that these particles can occur in the vaccine manufacturing process and is confident that there is no impact on the safety or efficacy of the vaccine," the Basel-based company said.

Archer fish hunt insects with water jet six times stronger than their muscular power

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Archer fish knock their insect prey out of overhanging vegetation with a jet of water several times more powerful than the fish's muscles. New research now shows that the fish generate this power externally using water dynamics rather than with any specialized internal organs.

The research, published Oct. 24 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Alberto Vailati and colleagues from the University of Milan, provides the first explanation for how archer fish can generate such powerful jets to capture their prey.

Other animals like chameleons and salamanders store energy in collagen fibers in their bodies and abruptly release this stored energy to project their tongues at high speeds, but previous studies on archer fish have ruled out such specialized organs as the source of the powerful water jets.

The authors of the current study used high-speed video recordings of archer fish knocking insects out of overhanging plants to study the mechanics of the water jet and found that the fish could modulate the velocity of the jet to create a single large water drop that hit the prey with a large force. According to the authors, this approach avoids the evolutionary costs needed to develop special internal structures to store these large amounts of energy.

"The origin of the effectiveness of the jet squirted by archer fish has been searched for inside of the fish for nearly 250 years. The striking finding of our work is that a large amplification of muscular power occurs outside of the fish and leads to a very powerful impact of the jet with the prey," says Vailati.

John Errol Ferguson has been on Florida's death row for 34 years.

By The Associated Press

An 11th hour decision by a federal appeals court has blocked the scheduled execution of a mass killer convicted of eight slayings that jolted South Florida in the 1970s.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a last-minute request Tuesday night from attorneys for 64-year-old John Errol Ferguson, who has been on Florida's death row for 34 years. Ferguson's lawyers contend he should not be executed because he suffers from severe mental illness.

He was scheduled to die at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. His last meal, according to the Miami Herald, was a chicken country fried sandwich and sweet tea.

Florida officials immediately asked the U.S. Supreme Court to lift the stay. The justices earlier Tuesday turned aside another Ferguson appeal.

Ferguson was convicted of killing eight people in South Florida in 1977 and 1978, including a teenage couple, and was a prime suspect in another double slaying. He suffers from paranoid schizophrenia but has previously been ruled competent for execution.

His lawyers say he believes he is the "Prince of God," according to the Miami Herald, to bolster their case that he is too mentally ill to be executed.

Death penalty opponents join in a chant across from Florida State Prison in Raiford, Fla. on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that inmates who suffer from "mental retardation" are exempt from the death penalty. According to the high court:

Mentally retarded persons frequently know the difference between right and wrong and are competent to stand trial, but, by definition, they have diminished capacities to understand and process information, to communicate, to abstract from mistakes and learn from experience, to engage in logical reasoning, to control impulses, and to understand others? reactions.

Their deficiencies do not warrant an exemption from criminal sanctions, but diminish their personal culpability.
