Notiifcation came to the family shortly after 8 p.m., a family friend said tonight. It was not immediately clear where Sullivan was specifically located within the sprawling water-filled quarry in Prince George County, but advanced equipment and sonar devices assisted in locating the youth who was reported lost in the water by two friends shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
This has been a breaking news update. Read more in tomorrow's Richmond Times-Dispatch.
From earlier reports
The terrain and murky depths of a quarry pond where a Prince George County boy presumably drowned created obstacles Wednesday for several dozen fire and rescue workers trying to find his remains.
Prince George Fire & EMS responders teamed with Chesterfield Fire & EMS divers and a Crater Regional Technical Rescue Team in plumbing the 40- to 80-foot depths of a Vulcan Materials quarry pond in search of 12-year-old Clacy Sullivan.
The all-day effort yielded no results. The search will resume this morning.
The boy, who lives with his family in a nearby mobile home park, apparently slipped into the water about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday while playing on the banks with two friends, ages 13 and 16. The older boys jumped into the water to try to save Clacy, who can?t swim, but saw him sink beyond their reach, police and family members said.
?He went under and they saw bubbles, and they didn?t see him anymore,? said Sandra Parham, the boy?s aunt. The water temperature reportedly was 45 degrees.
The depth of the water where the boy sank is ?anywhere from 40 to 80 feet,? said Prince George police Capt. Brian Kei. The quarry is cut into shelves measuring about 40 feet, he added.
?This isn?t a recreational waterway,? Kei said. ?And getting boats out to the water has been a hurdle because there?s really no dock. The water?s murky, and the depth of the water is creating some hurdles as well. Visibility is practically zero.?
Kei estimated 50 to 100 public safety workers took part in Wednesday?s search effort, with about four divers in the water at any given time. A police helicopter was parked nearby in case any of the divers experienced decompression sickness and had to be rushed to the hospital.
For much of the day, Clayton Curry, the boy?s stepfather, anxiously paced an open field where friends and family members gathered across from the quarry pond separated by Puddledock Road.
?I want to find my son,? Curry said as he stood on a wall made of quarry stones to get a better view of divers conducting the search. ?I need my son with me right now. If I could get in that water right now, I would. But I can?t.?
?I met his mom when he was 3 months old, and he?ll be 13 next month,? Curry said as he gazed across the water. ?This is my child. I raised him 12? years, that?s my kid.?
Curry said his son, a student at J.E.J. Middle School, couldn?t swim. ?We were just talking about taking swimming lessons? several days ago, he said.
Parham said Clacy had been playing near the quarry ?forever.?
?His father had told him to stop coming out here,? she said. ?As a matter of fact, they camped out here last Saturday night.?
Parham said Clacy?s two friends reported that Clacy slipped down a hill into the water.
?They tried to catch him, and they tried to pull him up and he went down,? Parham said. ?They was holding him, but because he was choking them (in panic) when they went in to get him, they had to release his hands.?
A bracelet slipped off Clacy?s arm as he slipped from the boys? grasp, Parham said.
One of the boys ran to call 911 while the other stayed near where Clacy went down, Parham said.
Parham questioned why there was no perimeter fence around the quarry pond to ?keep the kids out.?
?Too many kids come over here for that situation,? she said.
Kei said Vulcan Materials erected two large earthen berms around the quarry pond to keep people out, along with posting no trespassing signs. ?So Vulcan has done their due diligence, as far as to keep people off their property,? Kei said.
In a statement released late Wednesday, Vulcan officials said their employee are very concerned and sad about Clacy?s disappearance.
?Our main concern is for the family and friends of the victim, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them,? the statement said. ?We continue to cooperate with Prince George County Fire and EMS officials in their investigation and are doing everything we can to assist the investigators on the scene.?
Curry said he?s grateful for the support and prayers his family has received.
?I?m just hoping and praying they?ll find him and find him soon,? Curry said later Wednesday. ?Right now, all I can say is keep praying for us, and pray for the family.?
