DA welcomes proposed repeal of South African Boxing - Newsroom - DA

Donald Lee, Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation
3 June 2011

Chairperson of the Committee on Private Members? Legislative Proposals and Special Petitions, Hon SG Thobejane, has indicated in a report regarding a Private Member?s Bill I submitted regarding the dissolution of Boxing South Africa (BSA), that the South African Boxing Act Repeal Bill is likely be submitted to Cabinet for consideration next month. While it is regrettable that the proposal to repeal the South African Boxing Act was not submitted sooner, the Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes this development. BSA is the only sports federation administered by the state. In this sense, not only does it run against existing precedent but, on principle, the DA believes it is not the government's business to be managing professional sport. BSA represents another example of the ANC's obsession with centralizing power in South Africa, and the news that the repeal of the South African Boxing Act is likely to be considered by Cabinet is a step in the right direction.

The BSA has been incapable of delivering on its mandate, largely due to administrative collapse. The portfolio committee has proposed that it be dissolved, and the Auditor General has regularly referred to its financial disarray and poor management. It is high time that this body is dissolved altogether.

The DA will closely monitor the progress of the proposed South African Boxing Act Repeal Bill, and I will be submitting parliamentary questions to determine why it has taken so long for steps to be taken to dissolve this failing public entity.
